Volleyball Goes 2-0 at Rose-Hulman Tournament

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The William Woods University Volleyball team went 2-0 on the first day of the Rose-Hurlman Tournament. The Owls defeated Illinois College, 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-10) before defeating host, 3-2 (21-25, 25-27, 25-12, 25-9, 15-8).
 
The Owls return to action on Saturday, September 9 when they complete the Rose-Hulman Tournament. WWU plays at 10 a.m. CT when they play Monmouth (Ill.) and then Anderson University (Ind.) at 12 p.m. CT.

Game Flow

The Owls took control over set one as they acquired the first lead of the set, 2-0 The Owls would continue to take the lead as Rayleen Rivera added a kill to add to score putting the Owls ahead, 8-4. The Owls would then go on a ten-point binge with Brittney Engelbrecht with the serve, 19-5. Illinois College would gain a point before the Owls would serve with Reed on the service. Reed would add three points along with Kate Doerhoff, 23-6. Illinois College would add three points before the Owls end in a service ace by Jessica Jensen taking the set, 25-9.

Set two would begin with Illinois College taking the lead before the Owls would catch up and take the lead after a kill by Tory Wiley, 3-2. The set would then go back and forth before the Owls would take the lead, after a kill by Brittney Engelbrecht, 8-8. Abby Ferguson would then take the Owls for a six-point run adding kills from Kira Krebill and Rivera, 14-8. Illinois College would cut the Owl lead down to five points before Melanie Kala would add two more points for the Owls during her service run, 21-14. The Owls would not let the Lady Blues gain a kill with blocks from Krebill and Rivera, taking set two 25-18.

Set three would go point for point until Bellinger came out with a nine-point service run, adding two kills a piece by Ferguson, Wiley, and Engelbrecht, putting the Owls ahead 11-3. The Lady Blues would add five points before the Owls would add kills by Rivera and Doerhoff and a service ace by Engelbrecht, 17-8. The Owls would then go 4-4 in kills before taking the match, 25-10.

In set one, the Fighting Engineers won the first three points of the set taking an early 3-0 lead. The Owls chipped away at the lead until the Fighting Engineers went on a six-point run, three of those points being kills, 12-6. Kills by Ferguson, Krebill, Doerhoff, and Wiley helped the Owls cut the lead down to six, 18-12. The Owls scored nine more points adding kills form Wiley, Engelbrecht, and Krebill before they cut the lead down to three, 23-20. The Owls would add one more kill by Doerhoff before the Fighting Engineers would take set one, 25-21.

William Woods took a three-point lead in the second set after a kill by Tory Wiley and a service ace by Jessica Jensen, 7-4. The set then went point for point until the Owls ran away with a seven-point lead, 14-7 after adding kills by Ferguson, Engelbrecht, and Rivera. The Fighting Engineers added six-points after a successful service run by Gabi Razma, 15-13. The set then went back and forth before the Owls were up 24-23 after a kill by Ferguson. The Owls would fall in the second set after the Fighting Engineers took and ran away with the lead, 27-25.

Fighting to stay in the match, the Owls scored the first five of the seven points in the third set, 5-2. Wiley and Ferguson would continue to add kills to the set as they lead the Owls to a five-point lead, 13-8. The Owls would keep the lead throughout the remainder of the set as they held an eight-point lead over the Engineers, 18-10. The Fighting Engineers added two more points before the Owls offense took over the third set, 25-12.

The Owls controlled the majority of the fourth set as they were up 7-3 after a kill by Kate Doerhoff. The Fighting Engineers scored one point before the Owls took off with an eight-point lead, 15-4. The Owls allowed five more points to be scored against them before the Owls offense rallied off seven kills in a row, 23-5. A kill by Doerhoff would end it for the Owls, 25-9.

As the match continued to the fifth set, the Owls used their momentum to score the first five points, 5-0 three of those points being service aces. The Fighting Engineers chipped away at the Owl lead, but after a kill by Krebill, the Owls took an eight-point lead, 14-6. With one more point to play for, Rose-Hulman added two more points before the Owls took the set and match after a kill from Krebill, 15-8.
