Volleyball Falls Twice on Final Day of Cougar Fall Invite

COLUMBIA, Mo. –  The William Woods University volleyball concluded the Columbia Cougar Fall Tournament Saturday morning falling short to Georgetown University (Ky.) 3-1 and No. 21 Central Methodist 3-0. The Owls finished the tournament 1-3 and now move to 17-11 overall.
 
WWU returns to conference play October 18th when they take on Stephens College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Anderson Arena
 
Game Flow vs. Georgetown (Ky.)
Georgetown struck early on gaining a 3-0 lead over William Woods, but the Owls would stop the Tigers run when Remie Johnson found Rayleen Rivera for a kill and made the score 3-1. Although WWU got on the board Georgetown continued their aggression scoring two straight points. The Owls would finally got within one of the Tigers on a Tess Schannuth service ace giving Georgetown a 5-4 lead.
 
With William Woods now trailing 11-7, Schannuth was able to find Rivera for a kill and decrease the Tigers lead to three. As momentum began to build for the Owls, Hannah Kuehl was able to connect for a kill and move the score to 11-9.
 
The Tigers began to takeover towards the end of the set as they allowed the Owls to only get with five points. With the score 23-18 Sarah Bell found McKala Bozman for a kill and put Georgetown one point away from taking the set. William Woods would look to make one more push, but an attack error would give the Tigers their final point and Georgetown would walk away with the first set 25-18.
 
Determined to get the second set, WWU's Johnson was able to find Kuehl for a kill and give them an early 1-0 lead. But, the Tigers would quickly respond and Bozman struck hard for a tied the set at one. After going back and forth for the next few points, William Woods was able to jump out ahead and gain a 14-4 lead. Georgetown scored two quick points but would not be enough to stop the Owls as Schannuth was able to find Tory Wiley and push their led to 15-6.
 
The Tigers refused to disappear as they fought their way back to only being down 2. With WWU ahead 21-19, Kate Doerhoff recorded a kill on assist coming form Johnson and putting the Owls three points away from taking the set. Georgetown made one final push but could not get over the hump and the Owls took the second set, 25-21.
 
With the match tied 1-1 both teams needed the third set to get the advantage. William Woods were the first to strike when Johnson found Nisa Salima for a kill. Georgetown responded immediately when Kassidy Rauh found Madison Mudd for a kill that tied the game at 1. Mudd's kill sparked a 12-5 run and gave them a 13-6 lead over the Owls.
 
WWU attempted to come back, but the momentum of the Tigers was to much to over come and Georgetown would win the third set 25-19.
 
Georgetown carried over their momentum from the third set into forth as they were able to get out to a 12-6 lead over WWU. The Owls tried to find a spark but could not get passed the Tigers and would fall 24-17 towards the end of the set. 
 
Georgetown would go on to win the set 24-18 and take the match in a 3-1 victory.

Game Flow vs. No. 21 Central Methodist
The Owls got out to an early 1-0 lead when Remie Johnson found Kate Doerhoff for the first kill of the match. Central Methodist quickly responded when Shannon Peters found Marija Janjusevic for a kill and tied the game at 1.
 
With neither team able to gain a large lead, the Eagles finally broke the seal and was able to get a 10-8 advantage. Down, Rayleen Rivera was able to put the Owls with one on a service ace that made the score 11-10. But Central Methodist would not allow a comeback and found a way to increase their lead to 23-15.
 
Trailing, WWU attempted to make a run when Allie Gueck assisted Rivera for a kill and put the Owls within nine. One point away from taking the set, Central Methodist's Peters was able to find Mariana Do Nascimento for a kill and take the first set 25-16.
 
In the beginning of the second set neither team was able to capture a lead. Central Methodist would score, and the Owls responded right back. It was not until Grace Stumbaugh blocked an Owls attack and gave the Eagles a 9-6 lead. Ahead by three, Central Methodist continued adding to the score getting out to a 20-13 lead.  William Woods responded by going on a run of their own that was sparked by a Kira Krebill kill.
 
Trailing 23-18, the Owls had one final chance to make a run but did not connect on any attempts and the Eagles would take their second straight set 25-18.
One set away from taking the match, Central Methodist kept their foots on the gas as they broke out to 10-6 lead going in to the third set. 
 
Gueck found Tory Wiley for a kill that made the score 21-12. William Woods would have multiple chances to score but would not find a way and would fall to the Eagles 25-12 giving Central Methodist a 3-0 match victory.
