PARKVILLE, Mo. – The William Woods University volleyball team ended the 2018 regular season with a 3-0 loss to undefeated No. 1 Park University on Thursday evening. The Owls conclude regular season with a 19-15 mark, 9-3 in conference play. Park extends their winning streak to 27 games.
The Owls are in the AMC Tournament but await No. 4 Columbia to finish their regular season to find out the post-season seeding. Columbia would need to lose their final two games for the Owls to finish third in conference. Either way, the Owls will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, November 6.
Game Flow
The match began with multiple errors coming from both teams, but Park held a slight advantage until
Remie Johnson found
Kate Doerhoff for a kill to tie the set at 13-13. The Owls followed with a
Jaclyn Zahn kill and a Zahn, Johnson block to take a 15-13 lead.
Errors then plagued the Owls as they aided in Park's 8-3 rally, 22-19.
A service ace from
Kayton Coffee brought the Owls back within one, 23-22. A Park error evened the score, and the Owls followed with a kill from Zahn to take a 25-24 lead.
The Owls managed to stay one step ahead of Park in the final points off Park errors, but a Park block and an Owl attack error ended set one in extra points, 29-27.
Park took an early 3-1 lead to start set two, but back-to-back kills from Zahn put the score at 5-5. The Owls managed to stay just one step behind Park, tying the set every other point.
Just past the halfway point, Park found a 4-0 run to take an 18-14 lead. A Zahn kill brought the Owls within two, 19-17, forcing Park to burn a timeout, but the Owls were unable to close the gap back up, 25-22.
The Owls began set three with a Doerhoff, Johnson block and followed with a Rivera, Kuehl block to take a 2-0 lead. Kills from
Hannah Kuehl and Doerhoff pushed the Owls to a 4-1 lead before Park tied the set up, 4-4.
The Owls kept the set tied up to 7-7, but Park began to pull away with a 5-1 run. They continued to pull away, taking a six-point advantage, 18-12. The Owls were unable to recover and the match ended with a 25-16 set three loss.
