Owls Defeat Lincoln in Program's First Double-Overtime Game, 88-87

FULTON, Mo. ­– The William Woods University men's basketball team came away with an 88-87 double-overtime win over Lincoln College (Ill.) Monday evening. The double-overtime game was a first for the program.

The win snapped the Owl's losing streak and brings them to 3-4 on the season.

David Johnson Jr. led the Owls with 25 points while Aaron Brookins recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Owls take the next 10 days off from play. They return to action on Thursday, Nov. 29, as they host No. 6 Columbia College. Tip-off for the conference contest is set for 7:30 p.m.
 
Game Flow
The Owls scored first after a Treshawn Gause steal, but LC took up a seven-point lead six minutes into the game, 11-4.

After LC took an eight-point lead, Aaron Brookins hit a three followed by Jessie Frost-Dixon hitting a two to bring the Owls within three, 14-11.

LC continued to hold their lead throughout the first half. With 3:32 on the clock, Jessie Frost-Dixon was sent to the line for two. He drained both, bringing the Owls within two, 24-22. LC pulled an 8-2 run to close out the half though, leaving the Owls trailing, 35-26.

The Owls tied the game just three minutes into the second half but could not quite take the lead. Two free throws from Austin Curry brought the Owls within one, but LC pushed out a 10-point lead with 11:10 to play in regulation.

Aaron Brookins hit a three to jump-start an 8-0 Owl's run to cut the game to two, 54-52.

With 3:44 on the clock, Makenzie Fessler put one in in the paint to tie the game for just the second time. Following an offensive foul on LC, David Johnson Jr. made a long two to give the Owls their first lead since the start of the game.

LC quickly took back the lead with a traditional three-point play, but David Johnson Jr. scored once more to put the Owls up 62-61 with 2:11 on the clock. With 1:35 on the board, LC took over the one-point lead.

Treshawn Gause was fouled with 21 seconds left in the game, sending him to the line. He tied the game with his first free throw but missed the second, sending the game into the first overtime, 63-63.
LC took a six-point lead just under a minute and a half into the first overtime, 71-65.

The Owls trailed until Aaron Brookins and Jason Walker hit back-to-back threes, giving the Owls a one-point lead with 41 seconds to play, 73-72.

A foul by the Owls on a three-pointer allowed LC to take a two-point lead with just 10 seconds on the clock, but Austin Curry hit two clutch free throws to tie the game with just 2 seconds on the board. LC could not get a good shot off after, sending the game into the second overtime.

The Owls began the scoring in the second overtime with a David Johnson Jr. bucket in the paint.

The lead bounced back-and-forth six times with three ties mixed in, but two good free throws from Aaron Brookins gave the Owls a one-point lead with 1:49 to play.

Makenzie Fessler pushed the lead to three, and Shad Kimble added one more to the board with a free throw.

LC scored one in the paint, but Treshawn Gause grabbed a steal with 8 seconds on the clock and finished his fast break with a layup to give the Owls a four-point advantage.

Careful not to foul, the Owls allowed LC to take and hit a three with 1.1 on the clock, bringing the game within one. LC was unable to grab one of the Owls to foul, ending the game with an exciting 88-87 victory.
