FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's basketball team took their second loss of the season Wednesday night as they fell 78-86 to Missouri Valley.
The Owls shot 60% from the three point line, 46% from the field and 71% from the line.
David Johnson Jr. led WWU with 21pts and 11rebs.
Austin Curry and
Aaron Brookins both followed with 14pts each.
William Woods returns to action November 10
th as they head to Oskaloosaa, (Iowa) to face powerhouse William Penn. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Game flow
Both teams got off to a good start. Johnson Jr. knocked down two free throws and gave WWU a 2-0 lead. Missouri Valley quickly responded with layup coming from Gabe Mackenzie that tied the score at 2-2.
William Woods regained the lead with three pointer coming
Shad Kimble that gave the Owls a 5-4 lead. Missouri Valley's Danilo Ranger tied the game by knocking down a free throw.
With 16:12 remaining in the first half, Alonzo Williams was able to connect on a layup and make the score 7-7. WWU responded with a two point basket of their own coming from Johnson Jr.
Midway through the first half, William Woods was able to gain a three point lead when Brookins knocked down a shot from downtown and gave the Owls a 15-12 advantage. After making one three, Brookins hit another three point shot and pushed the lead to 18-13.
After trailing majority of the half, Mason Schlotzhauer knocked down a huge three pointer for Missouri Valley and tied the game 35-35.
In the final minute of the first half, Darrel Watson scored a two pointer and gave the Vikings a 46-44 lead going into the half.
With momentum on their side, Missouri Valley looked to keep it going. Mackenzie was able to connect on two pointer and stretch their lead to 48-44.
3-minutes into the second half, WWU was finally able to regain the lead when Johnson Jr. knocked down both his shots at the foul line and put WWU ahead 49-48.
Missouri Valley quickly regained the lead with a layup coming from Bobby Collinsiii that made the score 50-49.
At 8-minute mark, Mackenzie knocked down another two pointer and gave the Vikings a 64-66 lead. They pushed their lead out to 68-64 when Watson found room in the lane for a bucket.
Missouri Valley regained their momentum and found themselves ahead 84-73.
The Owls made one last push, but would not get over the hump and Missouri Valley walk away with 86-78 victory.
