Columbia, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team and Columbia College went into penalty kicks to decide who becomes the AMC Tournament Champion and earns the automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament Thursday evening. The two teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 after 110 snowy minutes of play, forcing the Owls second PK decision game in a row. CC outscored the Owls 3-0 in PKs, ending the Owl's season with an 11-6-4 record.
Game Flow
Columbia was the first team to get things rolling in the opening minutes. Abigail Meyer attempted a shot for the Cougars five minutes into the game but it was blocked by the William Woods defense. A few seconds later, Allison Floyd attempt a shot for CC but it missed wide of the goal.
Fifteen minutes into the first half,
McKenzie Gourley attempted the Owl's first shot of the match, but it went wide of the goal.
WWU looked to take the lead midway through the half when
Aurora Henriksen attempted a shot on goal that was saved by Cougars goal keeper Erin Jones. Four minutes later, Columbia attempted to take the lead when Samantha Bassler had a shot on goal that was saved by
Abbey West.
With 14:41 remaining in the half, Lucy Kingsley attempted a shot for the Cougars, but West would be there for the save. Exactly one minute later, Kaitlyn Tambke attempted a shot on goal for Columbia, but West was there once again for the save.
The Cougars attempted one more shot on goal in the final minutes of the half, but it would be saved by West.
Returning from halftime, both teams needed to find away to score. Columbia looked to do just that with a shot attempt coming from Bassler that was deflected by Clarie Stark.
Ten minutes into the second half, William Woods almost took the lead with a shot coming from
Shelby Wiebe that hit the post and kept the game tied 0-0.
After almost getting the lead, WWU looked to take the lead again when
Abby Prather-Turner attempted a shot on goal that was saved by Jones.
Midway through the second half, Columbia's Kingsley attempted a shot on goal that was saved by West. Immediately following Kingsley's attempt was Elisa Vega whose shot hit the crossbar.
On a through ball in the 84
th minute, keeper
Abbey West came off her line to break up the play but Columbia's player won the ball and had an open net to score the first goal of the game.
After a corner kick from
Abby Prather-Turner just over a minute later, the CC keeper dropped the ball. It was loose inside the box and
Claire Stark found it and put it in the back of the net to equalize the game, 1-1.
CC took three more shots in the remaining five minutes of regulation but West made two stops and
Rosemary Lenz blocked the final one to send the game into overtime.
Overtimes
In the beginning of the first overtime, Columbia was the first to attack. Kingsley just about ended the game with a shot attempt that hit high off the crossbar. Three minutes later, Kingsley attempted another attempted that was saved by West.
In the final minute of the first overtime, William Woods was able to get a shot attempt off that came from Gourley, but Columbia's Jones was there for the save and the game would go into double overtime.
In the second overtime, WWU was the first to strike when Henriksen attempted a shot that was blocked by Katie Cook. Just 10 seconds later, Wiebe looked to put the Owls ahead with an attempt on goal that was saved by Jones.
Shelby Scanlan attempted the final shot in double overtime for the Owls, but Jones was there for the save.
With a decision needed to be made in order to give out the automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament, the game headed into penalty kicks.
CC began the PKs with a goal. The Owls first one went wide, giving CC a 1-0 lead. Keeper
Taylor Hoeltke dove right to save CC's second PK, leaving CC with a 1-0 advantage. The next two shots were saved by CC and CC made two more to advance on PKs, 3-0.
