Owls Pull Out Overtime Victory over Williams Baptist

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The William Woods University men's basketball team pulled out their second consecutive conference victory with an overtime win at Williams Baptist University. The Owls move to 6-5 on the season with a 3-2 conference mark heading into the holiday break.

The Owls overcame an 11-point deficit in the first quarter but lost an 11-point lead late in the second quarter, forcing the game into overtime. The Owls possessed the lead throughout overtime, securing the conference victory. The Owls shot .544 from the field during the 45 minutes of play, and David Johnson Jr. recorded his third double-double of the season with 25 points and 10 boards.

The Owls next play at Southwest Baptist University in an exhibition contest on Monday, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m.
 
Game Flow
WBU took the lead to start the game, and although the Owls tied it up once early in the game, WBU put up an 11-point lead halfway through the first.

The Owls smashed a 14-0 run into three minutes to take a three-point lead with 6:07 on the clock, 44-41.

The lead switched twice, but a three-pointer from Aaron Brookins gave the Owls the lead after the game's fifth tie. Codi Whitlock scored the final points of the half for the Owls, and the team headed into halftime with a 53-51 advantage.

The competitive play continued at the start of the second half with the lead changing four times and five ties in the first four minutes.  

A bucket from Makenzie Fessler in the paint jumpstarted the Owl's 10-0 run to bring the score to 77-67 with 9:24 on the clock. The Owls pushed the lead to 11 with a fast break bucket from Jason Walker following David Johnson Jr.'s steal, 86-75.

WBU cut the game to five and minutes later to two. With 30 seconds on the clock, the Owls fouled WBU on a made bucket to help them cut the game to one.

Shad Kimble went 2-for-2 on his bonus free throws to take back a three-point lead with :23 on the clock, but with :07 on the board, WBU hit a three to tie the game.

WBU called a timeout, and the Owls were unable to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded, sending the game into overtime.

The Owls were fouled on a rebound just 15 seconds into the overtime, sending Makenzie Fessler to the line for a bonus. He went 2-for-2, giving the Owls the lead, but WBU tied the game up just 15 seconds later off a basket.

A three from Fessler put the Owls back on top, and an Austin Curry fast break layup off his own steal and a Fessler bucket down low gave the Owls a five-point lead halfway through overtime.

Treshawn Gause went 2-for-2 from the foul line to take back a three-point lead with 13 seconds to play after WBU cut the game to one. WBU attempted a three at the buzzer but missed, ending the game with a 109-106 overtime win for the Owls.
