ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team was defeated by Harris-Stowe State University, 67-57, on Thursday night in American Midwest Conference action.
Bailey Rollins led the Owls with 13 points and
Hannah Bland followed with 11 points rounding out the double figure scorers.
Jasmine Brown led the Owls with 13 rebounds and Bland followed with 12 rebounds, collecting a double-double. WWU shot 41.7 percent from the floor in the contest.
The Owls return to action on Tuesday, February 13th when they host No. 25 Lindenwood University – Belleville in an AMC matchup. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
Game Flow
The Owls and Hornets came out on fire in the first quarter as they traded buckets over the first two minutes of the quarter. With the Owls down three, 8-5, scored the next five points, three from
Peyton Greenlee and two from
Bailey Rollins putting the Owls ahead, 10-8, with 4:53 left in the quarter. After Harris-Stowe tied the game at 10-10, WWU stretched the lead to 13-10 before the Hornets tied the game on a Jay'la Davis three. WWU scored five more points in the quarter and led 18-15, after one quarter of play.
The shooting cooled off in the second quarter. Rollins hit a three putting the Owls ahead by four, 21-17, but the Hornets answered back with a three by Alantis Sutton. The Owls and Hornets continued to trade leads and after a three by Tarsheia Page, the Owls trailed 26-25. After the Hornets stretched the lead to four, WWU came back after a jumper by
Hannah Bland put the Owls down two, 31-29. The lead went to five for the Hornets late in the quarter and the Owls trailed by four, 36-32, at halftime.
The Owls came back and trimmed the lead to two, 36-34, after a Bland layup to open the third quarter. After the layup by Bland, the Hornets again grew the lead to five, 40-35. The Owls continued to battle and after four straight, two by Brown and two by Sommer Burgaurd, the Owls tailed by one, 40-39. Harris-Stowe grew the lead to as many as nine, 51-42, heading to the fourth quarter.
Harris-Stowe grew the lead to 13 points, 55-42, after a jumper by Ladaijha Watson jumper in the paint. After trailing by 13, Rollins hit a three and Tori Nessledge hit a free throw putting the Owls down seven, 55-48, with 6:41 left in the fourth. William Woods continued to battle and five points by Brown and a layup by Bland put the Owls down two, 57-55, with 3:42 left in the game. However, the Owls offense went cold as they only scored two more points for the remainder of the contest and the Owls were defeated by the Hornets, 67-57.
