Furtney Shines as Owls Baseball Shutouts Williams Baptist

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The William Woods University baseball team defeated Williams Baptist College, 7-0, on Friday afternoon in AMC action. The Owls starter Ryan Furtney pitched a complete game four hitter earning the win for the Owls.
 
The win for Furtney is his sixth victory of the season. He struck out six Eagles in the contest. Marquise Doherty led the Owls with fours hits and Frankie Valle followed with three in the contest.
 
WWU returns to action next week when they take on Columbia College in American Midwest Conference action. Time and location of the games have not yet been announced. Please stay tuned to wwuowls.com for more updates on the doubleheader against the Cougars.
 
Game Flow
After the Owls went down in order, the Eagles looked as if they would answer in the bottom of the first. Jose Rojas drew a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. He moved to third on a ground out. With two outs and a runner on third, Owls starter Ryan Furtney, struck out Denny Elligson ending the inning.
 
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning. With Frankie Valle took the first pitch of his at-bat over the left field fence putting the Owls ahead 1-0. After two straight outs, Nolan Aherin singled to center field. Marquise Doherty followed with a single by Aherin was thrown out trying to get to third base.
 
The Eagles put its leadoff guy on as Cam Smith singled to right to start off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, Smith advanced to second base. After the bunt, Furtney got Colton Dunbar and Trent Johns to fly out to end the inning, keeping the Owls ahead 1-0.
 
WWU grew its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Glen DesBouillons came up to the plate. After looking at a strike, the next pitch he saw was hit for a home run over the left field fence putting the Owls ahead, 2-0.
 
Furtney continued to roll in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings as Williams Baptist brought one over the minimum to the plate in those innings. Cam Smith was the only Eagle to reach in either inning as he drew a walk.
 
The Owls grew the lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth inning. Tyler Cunningham led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed over to second. He went to third on a single by Doheryt putting runners on the corners. He came into score on a Layne Ditto's error putting WWU ahead 3-0.
 
The lead continued to get extended and in the top of the seventh inning, the Owls struck again. With one out, Jordan Smith singled and then stole second base. He went to third on a Josh Nicol single. Smith came into score when Valle singled to right center.
 
With the score 4-0 heading to the eighth inning, WWU continued putting pressure on the Eagles defense. With one out, Doherty reached on a Williams Baptist error. He scored when Patrick Dillon hit a double to right center. After a single by DesBouillons put runners on the corners, the Owls pulled a double-steal and Dillon stole home putting the Owls head 6-0.
 
The Eagles struggled figuring out Furtney in the contest as Marcos Palacios was struck out to start the bottom of the eighth. Rojas filed out to left for the second out and Pedro Lopez struck out ending the inning.
 
WWU continued to taking advantage of Eagles errors and in the top of the ninth inning, Valle reached on an error and stole second base. He went to third on a ground out and scored on a Cunningham ground out, putting the Owls ahead 7-0.
 
Heading to the bottom of the ninth, Furtney came back out looking for the complete game shutout. The first Eagle reached base on an Owls error. He then got Elligson to pop out and struck out Colton Dunbar for the second out of the inning. Trent Johns singled putting two on before Furtney got Jeremiah Nance to pop out ending the game. WWU won the third game of the series, 7-0.
