FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University men's soccer team kicks off its 2018 season on Monday, August 20th when they host No. 18 Central Methodist University in non-conference action at Firley Field. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
About the Eagles
CMU enters the contest with a preseason national ranking of 18 in the NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Preseason Poll. The Eagles finished the season 13-3-3 last season and they return NAIA All-Americans Adrian Gutierrez and Santiago Sierra. Leading the Eagles in goals last year was Leonardo Ferri who scored 13 goals. As a team, the Eagles scored 56 goals in 19 games last year. They had 11 shutouts on the season.
Last Season Against CMU
Last season the Owls and Eagles squared off on August 30th, and the Eagles came away with a 2-0 victory over the Owls. Paulo Vac Claudio scored both goals for the Eagles.
All-Time vs. CMU
William Woods is 8-12-1 all-time against Central Methodist. The last win for the Owls over the Eagles was on Sept. 10th, 2014 when they defeated the Eagles 3-1.
Playing and Winning at Firley Field
The Owls appear at Firley Field eight times this season. Last season the Owls played nine games at home and went 6-1-2 on the season. Over the past two seasons, the Owls are 11-1-4 when playing at Firley Field. The lone loss for the Owls the past two season at home came against Missouri Baptist in the AMC Quarterfinals.
Season Openers
As a men's soccer program, the Owls are 9-8-4 in season opening contests. The last win in a regular season opener was during the 2016 season when the Owls defeated Sterling, 1-0. Under Coach Mason, the Owls are 4-3-3 in the season opener. Last season the Owls tied with 0-0 with Graceland (Iowa) in double overtime.
Owls Picked Second In Preseason Poll
On Monday, August 13th, the men's soccer team was picked to finish second in the American Midwest Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. The lone team standing in front of the Owls was rival Columbia College.
2017 AMC Champions
For the first time in school history, the Owls men's soccer program claimed the 2017 American Midwest Conference Regular Season Championship. The Owls went 10-0-1 in the AMC this season. WWU looks to repeat as AMC Champion.
Wilson Returns for the Owls
Coming off a freshman season, that saw him be named the AMC Freshman of the Year, the Owls return
Darren Wilson for his sophomore season. Wilson scored 21 points, second on the team in 2017, and seven goals, third most on the team, last season. Wilson dished out a team-high seven assists, and scored four game winning goals during the 2017 season.
