PARKVILLE, Mo. – The William Woods University men's basketball team captured their 11
th win of the season Thursday night as they defeated the Park Pirates 74-65. Brain Enriquez and
Treshawn Gause both scored a season high 13 points in the contest.
Makenzie Fessler also scored 13 points in the contest.
Aaron Brookins chipped in 11 points on 4-10 shooting while
Codi Whitlock chipped in 10.
WWU returns to action Saturday, Jan. 19
th when they travel to Lincoln Ill. To face Lincoln College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Game Flow
The Pirates were the first to put points on the board. A two point lay-in from Ernest Myles gave them a 2-0 lead. David Johnson responded for WWU by connected on his two point attempt to tie the game.
4 minutes into the half, Ernest Myles knocked down another two point basket giving Park an 11-8 lead. The Owls quickly cut their lead back down to two, when Gause knocked down a nice midrange jumper.
At the 15:52 mark,
Shad Kimble knocked down his first three pointer of the game putting William Woods down 14-13. A minute and a half later, Kimble created a steal and a fast break bucket to put the Owls up 16-14.
The Pirates eventually regained a 17-15 lead when Josh Rutland made his free throw attempt.
With the game tied 20-20 at the halfway mark, Gause put WWU back ahead on another midrange jumper. A few moments later, the Pirates tied the game on a Myles finish in the paint.
Most of the first half was a back and forth battle with neither team able to gain a real advantage. Finally, with little over a minute left in the half, Zach Ruthland found the bottom of the net on his midrange floater pushing Park ahead 38-32.
Whitlock knocked down a free throw for the Owls in the final seconds, but Allen Hyatt knocked down a two point basket before the buzzer giving the Pirates a 40-33 halftime lead.
2 minutes into the second half, Enriquez had strong finish in the paint that put WWU behind 43-37; his lay-up also sparked a 6-4 run putting them down 4.
Down 47-45,
Makenzie Fessler scored a basket in the paint that put William Woods down 47-45. 40 seconds later, Parks Hyatt returned the favor by knocking down a two point bucket of his own.
At the 11:58 mark, Blue Johnson hit a huge two pointer for the Pirates that put them ahead 53-47.
After trailing most of the second half, William Woods finally took a 57-55 lead when Brookins hit a deep three pointer.
Park continued the push but could not slow the Owls down. With 3 minutes remaining in the game, Kimble hit another three point basket pushing the WWU lead to 67-61.
With their largest lead of the game, the Owls kept their foot on the gas getting out to a 74-63 lead. In the final seconds of regulation, Hyatt scored another basket in the paint.
The Owls went on to win the contest 74-65. William Woods is now 11-6 overall and 8-3 in the AMC.
