Controlling Second Quarter Helps Push Owls Past MBU, 70-58

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University women's basketball team used a controlling second quarter to defeat Missouri Baptist Saturday afternoon, 70-58. The Owls move to 15-7 on the season and 11-5 in conference play. They have won their last seven of eight games, quickly bouncing back from their narrow loss at No. 2 Columbia two days prior.
 
Kaycee Gerald was the game's leading scorer, posting 22 points as she went 8-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from the foul line. Peyton Greenlee came up just shy of a double-double as she posted 12 points and pulled down nine boards, all from the defensive end of the court.
 
With eight more games left in regular season, the schedule features six of them at home. The Owls have a three-game home stretch, beginning with a 5:30 p.m. contest versus No. 1 Freed-Hardeman University on Thursday, Jan. 31.
 
Game Flow
The Owls scored the first points of the game and took a five-point lead three minutes in, but MBU pushed an 8-0 run over a three-minute span to take a three-point lead, 10-7. 
 
After almost four minutes of silence, Peyton Greenlee knocked down a three to knot the game at 10 with 3:45 on the clock. The lead was tied up twice more, and MBU scored the last points of the game to hold the 17-14 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
The Owls pushed a 7-0 run to start the second quarter, holding MBU scoreless for the first four minutes of play. With 4:44 on the clock, MBU brought the game within one, but the Owls answered with a controlling 11-0 run to close out the half, 36-24.
 
Kasey Hazell scored the first points of the second half, giving the Owls a 14-point lead. The Owls maintained a double-digit lead throughout the third quarter, and the team pushed an 11-2 run to end the quarter, 56-36.
 
Kaycee Gerald knocked down the first bucket of the final quarter, giving the Owls a 22-point lead, their largest of the game. While outscoring the Owls 22-14 in the final quarter, MBU managed to cut the game to 12 by the final buzzer, 70-58.
