WWU Continues Streak in a 70-68 Upset over N0.18 Central Baptist

CONWAY, AR. – The William Woods University men's basketball team continued their win streak Saturday afternoon as they upset N0.18 Central Baptist 70-68.
 
WWU had four players score in double digits. David Johnson Jr. led the way with 18 points, Treshawn Gause and Aaron Brookins both scored 12 points each and Shad Kimble chipped in 10 points of his own.
 
The Owls return to action, Tuesday Jan. 8th as they face Lindenwood University-Belleville. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
 
Game Flow
WWU started of the first half strong by getting out to an early 7-2 lead. Central Baptist finally got things rolling when Percell Washington connected on a two point basket and sparking a small run that put the Mustangs behind 7-5.
 
With Central Baptist quickly approaching, Gauses knocked down a nice midrange jump shot that pushed the Owls lead to 9-5. A few seconds later, Johnson Jr. hit a three point basket the stretched the WWU lead to 12-5.
 
8 minutes into the first half, Willima Woods was able to get a 20-11 lead when Makenzie Fessler his first basket of the game from behind the arc. The Mustangs returned the favor by knocking down a three point bucket of their own that came from Jordan Ford, but the Owls would continue the three pointers when Brookins knocked down another one for WWU putting them ahead 23-14. Central Baptist refused to be outshot. After knocking down a three point basket a few seconds earlier, Ford knocked down his second straight basket from down town putting the Mustangs down 23-17.
 
After a short three point showdown, Jalen Adams connected for a strong basket in the paint putting Central Baptist down four.
 
At the 8:40 mark, Tyler Williams connected on his lay in for the Mustangs making the score 23-21. WWU was able to regain their four point lead when Codi Whitlock's two point basket found the bottom of the basket.
 
With 2 minutes remaining in the half, Percell Washington finished in the paint for Central Baptist and tied the game at 34.
William Woods would regain a 38-36 lead when Kimble's midrange jump shot found the net and giving the Owls a small halftime lead.
 
After a tough fought first half, WWU was able to gain a 48-39 advantage within the first three minutes of the second half.
 
A Johnson Jr. basket pushed the Owls lead to 11 giving them their largest lead of the game.
 
5 minutes into the second half, Washington was able to slow the Owls momentum down when his two point basket found the bottom of the net putting the Mustangs behind 50-41. 30 seconds later, Washington had another strong finish in the paint that put Central Baptist down six. He finished with 25 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in the contest.
 
With 13 minutes remaining in regulation, Washington continued his powerful play as he scored once again for the Mustangs. Immediately following the Washington basket, Jarma Perkins hit a huge three point basket for Central Baptist that put them behind 50-49.
 
Gause responded to the Central three pointer by knocking one down a midrange jumper that gave the Owls a 52-49 lead.
 
Midway through the half, Victor Dukes had a strong finish in the paint and gave Central Baptist a 55-54 lead. WWU quickly regained the lead when Brookins hit another three point basket putting the Owls ahead 57-56.
 
With 2 minutes left in the contest, Dukes came through big for the Mustangs had his hit a three point basket that put them ahead 68-65. WWU returned the favor when Kimble knocked down a three pointer of his own with 26 seconds remaining.
 
Central Baptist had two opportunities at the foul line but missed both attempts. With 3 seconds left to play, Fessler was fouled and sent to the line where he made both attempts and put the Owls up 70-69.
 
Tyrone Alston chucked a three point bomb for the Mustangs but missed and William Woods would walk away with a 70-69 upset.
