INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The William Woods University women's soccer team saw their season come to a close in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round with a 3-0 shutout loss to No. 14 Hastings College. With their third NAIA National Championship appearance, the Owls ended their season with a 12-9 record.
No. 14 Hastings will now play host No. 13 Marian University in the second game of the Opening Round. The winner will punch a ticket to the NAIA National Championship in Orange Beach, Ala.
HC struck early with a goal in the 16
th minute after two other shot attempts. They took one more shot before
Taylor Amlong fired off a shot on goal for the Owls in the 24
th minute, but the HC keeper made the stop.
Aurora Henriksen took a shot in the 30
th minute but the ball traveled high. The Owls' defense held HC to just two more shots on goal, and
Michyla Handley stopped each.
Brianna Morrow took the last shot of the half but the ball sailed over the crossbar to send the game into halftime with WWU trailing 1-0.
HC took six shots before connecting in the 72
nd minute to take a 2-0 lead. They continued their attack but the Owls' defense was able to block the next two shots.
In the 87
th minute, Hastings scored their third goal of the game following a corner kick.
The Owls were unable to get a shot off in the second half, ending regulation with a 3-0 season-ending loss.
Handley made five saves in goal.
