Owls Prepare for AMC Championship Saturday Against No. 2 Columbia

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University Men's Soccer team prepares for the opening round of the 2019 American Midwest Conference Men's Soccer Championship as they match up against one-seed No. 2 Columbia. The Owls face No. 2 Columbia on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. in Columbia, Mo.

About Columbia
The Cougars ended their 2019 regular season with a perfect 17-0 record, helping them to a second-place ranking in the NAIA Men's Soccer Top-25. They won the AMC title outright with an 11-0 record.

Over the course of the season, Columbia shutout 12 of their opponents. On Sept. 27, they scored a season-high four goals in a shutout victory over Freed-Hardeman.

They ended the season with three national rankings; they ranked first overall in shutouts per game (1), first overall in total shutouts (12) and 47th overall in shots per game (17).

Ryan Harrisskitt is the only Cougar player with a national ranking. He ranks 47th overall in shots per game (.3).

Nick Brandt and Joe Spotanski have led the way for Columbia with six total goals each this season. Brandt scored a career-high two goals in their win over Judson on Aug. 24. Spotanski also scored a career-high two goals in their victory over Central Baptist on Oct. 12.

Last season, the Cougars were crowned the 2018 AMC Tournament Champions when they defeated Lyon 1-0. They advanced to the NAIA Men's Soccer National Championships where they lost in the opening round to Cardinal Stritch University, 2-0.

After a rocky start to the season, the Owls were able to clinch the eight-seed in the American Midwest Conference Championship with a 6-12 overall record and a 4-7 AMC finish.

WWU ended their 2019 regular season with an 6-0 loss to Lyon on Nov. 2. Prior to the loss, they were on a two-game winning streak, defeating Harris-Stowe and St. Louis Pharmacy.
 
William Woods ended the regular season with two national rankings; they rank 29th overall in total saves (108), and 36th overall in saves per game (6).
 
Iker Gonzalez and Billy Nzojyibwami have remained the only WWU players with a national ranking. Gonzalez ranks 20th overall in total saves (97) and 21st overall in saves per game (6). Nzjyibwami ranks 39th overall in total goals (13). His 13 goals are also a team-high. Roberto Duro Sanchez and Jagan Crane follow with three goals each this season.

Last season, the Owls lost in the semi-finals round of the 2018 AMC Championship to Missouri Baptist, 2-1. Wessel Albers scored the only goal for the Owls in the contest.
