Owls Fall Short in AMC Game of the Week

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The William Woods University men's basketball team lost the lead late in Saturday's AMC Game of the Week at Lyon College and was unable to recover, 51-50. The Owls drop to 7-7 on the season with a 3-4 conference mark. 
 
The Owls are off for the rest of the year and return to action in the new year at Missouri Baptist University on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 3 p.m.
 
By The Numbers
18 – Tyriel Nelson scored a floor-high 18 points (7-for-13 FG, 3-for-6 3FG).
16 – Makenzie Fessler went 5-for-8 from the field and 5-for-5 from the foul line to score 16 points.
12 – Fessler scored 12 in the first half.
9 – Darius Yohe pulled down nine boards with eight coming from the defensive end. 
 
Game Flow
Lyon took a 4-0 lead while holding the Owls scoreless through the first 3:33 of the game. Makenzie Fessler broke the silence for the Owls with a traditional three-point play after being fouled on his made bucket. 
 
Tyriel Nelson scored seven straight to push the Owls to a four-point lead with 8:46 to play, 14-10. 
 
Lyon knotted the game twice, but Fessler hit a three to take back the lead with 3:55 to play, 20-19. Andrew Nett pushed the lead to four after a fast break three-pointer, 23-19.
 
After Lyon went 2-for-2 from the foul line to cut the game to two, the Owls struck a 7-0 run to close out the half, 30-21. 
 
Lyon opened the second half with an 11-2 run to tie up the game at 32-32.
 
Mike Robinson drained a three followed by Nelson's two to give the Owls back a five-point lead, 37-32.
 
The Owls pushed an 8-0 run to take a 10-point lead with back-to-back threes from Nelson, 47-37, but Lyon once again cut the game to three with 8:21 on the clock.
 
Fessler went 2-for-2 from the foul line to put the Owls back up by five with 7:22 to play, but Lyon scored the next seven over a four-minute span to take a two-point lead with 3:05 on the clock, 51-49.
 
Codi Whitlock was fouled on the way up, sending him to the line with 2:08 on the clock. He went 1-for-2, bringing the Owls within one, 51-50.
 
Both teams were unable to score in the final two minutes, ending the game with a 51-50 loss.
