ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The William Woods University men's basketball team lost their final regular season game Saturday afternoon to St. Louis College of Pharmacy, 77-75. With the loss, WWU received the forth-place seed in the American Midwest Conference Tournament and will host the number five seed Central Baptist on Thursday, Feb. 28. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Anderson Arena.
Treshawn Gause broke the single season steals record as he recorded two in the upset.
Shad Kimble led the Owls with 22 points and 8 rebounds.
David Johnson Jr. followed with 15 points and 7 rebounds.
Jason Walker chipped in 12 points and
Makenzie Fessler rounded out WWU scoring with 10 points in the contest.
Game Flow
William Woods was the first to strike a punch in the contest. 20-seconds into the first half, Johnson Jr. connected on his two-point attempt and gave WWU a 2-0 lead.
St. Louis Pharmacy would not score their first basket until 1-minute into the game with Dalton Shust's strong finish in the paint that tied the game 2-2.
After back and forth scoring, the Owls were finally able to gain a small 11-7 lead when Johnson Jr. finished 2-2 from the foul line. Immediately following the Owls free throws, Shust knocked down a huge Eutectic three-pointer putting Pharmacy down one. About one minute later Darius Dorsey hit another three-pointer for STLCOP and gave them their first lead of the game, 13-11.
With 13:07 remaining in the first half, St. Louis Pharmacy found themselves up 18-11.
Finally, after a quick Eutectic run,
Andrew Nett slowed things down as he was fouled and sent to the line where he made 1-of-2 to bring the score to 18-12.
William Woods cut the deficit to three when Johnson Jr. knocked down a deep three-point basket, but STLCOP would quickly respond with a three-pointer of their own coming from Shust.
The Eutectics pushed their lead to 23-15 as they scored on a nice move in the post, but the Owls refused to go away. At the midway point of the first half, Kimble hit a nice fast-break three to put WWU behind 23-18. Shust would respond once again for Pharmacy and knock down another three-point basket and give them a 26-18 lead.
The Owls continued to fight in the final minutes of the first half but could not regain a lead. St. Louis College of Pharmacy would walk into halftime ahead 42-38.
After controlling majority of the first half, the Eutectics returned to the second half energized. A two-point basket from Dorsey would stretch their lead to 44-38.
Fessler was able to get the Owls within four when his two-point basket in the paint fell through. Moments later,
Treshawn Gause grabbed a steal and scored the basket to put WWU behind 44-42.
A Johnson Jr. free throw put William Woods within one, but the Eutetics would push their lead back to three with a midrange jump shot.
After trailing majority of the game, WWU finally took a 47-46 lead when Kimble connected on his two-point attempt, but STLCOP would quickly regain the lead when their fast-break lay-in connected.
With both teams trading baskets and 10:18 left on the clock, the Owls were able to gain a 57-51 lead when Walker hit a three-pointer from the top of the key.
The Eutectics quickly scored back-to-back baskets and found themselves down one.
At the 2:05 mark, WWU had a 73-69 lead over STLCOP.
Pharmacy was able to get back within one of the Owls when Dorsey forced a turnover and got sent to the line where he made both attempts.
With the Eutectics down one, William Woods needed to be very cautious. With 58-seconds left in the game, Dorsey forced another turnover and found Trevyn Dugar for a fast-break lay-up that put them up 74-73.
Down one, WWU's Kimble knocked down a clutch two-point basket and gave the Owls a 75-74 lead with 38-seconds left.
At the 18-second mark, Dugar found a wide open Uros Rogan for a three-point basket that gave the Eutectics a 77-75 lead. William Woods tried to respond with a three-pointer of their own but could not connect.
St. Louis College of Pharmacy walked away with a 77-75 victory over the Owls.
