FULTON, Mo.– The William Woods University softball team split with Hannibal-LaGrange in their weekday conference doubleheader. The Owls dropped game one, 2-1, but went on to shutout the Trojans 6-0 in game two.
The Owls move to 7-14 on the season with a 2-4 conference mark.
The Owls conclude their four-date home stretch with a conference doubleheader versus Stephens College on Friday, March 22. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
Game One
HLG scored the first run of the day in the third inning on an RBI single after the Owls left runners stranded in scoring positions in the first and second innings.
The Owls quickly tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third.
Emma Walker led off with a triple, and
Ari Arnold brought her home with a single just over the second baseman's head.
Emily Robinett put herself in scoring position in the fourth inning, but was left stranded to leave the game at 1-1.
In the top of the sixth, HLG added a run off a two out RBI double to take a 2-1 lead.
The Owls' defense held a runner at third in the top of the seventh to hold HLG from adding another, but the Owls faced three quick outs in the bottom of the inning to end the game with a 2-1 loss.
Emily Robinett went 3-for-3 from the plate with a double.
Emma Walker went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
Madison Ausfahl (3-7) pitched the complete game, struck out five and allowed just one earned run.
Game Two
The Owls scored a run in every inning except the fifth.
In the bottom of the first, Walker and
Anna Counts scored on
Alli Massey's two RBI double, giving the Owls an early 2-0 lead.
In the second, errors plagued the Trojans and helped
Bri Devellano score.
The Owls added their fourth run in the fourth with
Ari Arnold's RBI single to center field. Counts scored after doubling to right-center field to get on base.
In the bottom of the sixth, Counts led off with a triple and was brought home on Massey's RBI single to center field to give the Owls a 6-0 lead. The Owls left two stranded, but the defense picked up with three outs in the top of the seventh, ending the game with a double play to win it 6-0.
The Owls recorded 10 hits in the six innings. Counts went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Massey went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and a run scored.
Lindy Wilson also went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Brittany Roady (4-5) pitched the complete game shutout win. She faced 23 batters and struck out three while allowing no runs.
