FULTON, Mo. – William Woods University Baseball concluded their 2019 campaign Saturday afternoon when they defeated Williams Baptist 12-10 in the last of a three-game series. The Owls shutout the Eagles 3-0 for the series victory. With those victories the WWU ended their season on a five-game win streak. This series was also the final time
Brock Nehls and 12 seniors would take the field as Owls.
Game Summary
Williams Baptist got things started early in the contest. Halfway through the top of the first inning, Tyler Cole put the first run of the board and gave them an early 1-0 lead. Seconds later Cam Smith swiped home plate and pushed the Eagles lead to 2-0.
The Owls would not respond to the early run of Williams Baptist until the bottom of the second when
Tyler Bracht advanced home and put WWU down one. A few pitches later,
Brian Granton and
Alex Wimer both reached home on a
Douglas Martin single down left center field and gave the Owls a 3-2 lead. Martin would score his second run of the contest towards the end of the inning on a
Marquise Doherty single down center field.
Isaiah Gibbs also scored on the single and pushed the William Woods lead to 5-2.
After falling behind three runs, WBU had trouble responding to the quick run of WWU.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, William Woods decided to increase their lead even more. Martin and Gibbs both recorded their second runs of the contest when they reached home on
Zach Smith double down deep left center field. The two runs gave the Owls a 7-2 advantage over the Eagles.
Quincy Jones, Doherty and Russell Strilchuck would all reach home plate courtesy of a Bracht double down left field. With an eight run lead, Bracht recorded the 11
th run for the Owls when he reached home on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Finally, after watching the Owls stack up runs, Williams Baptist was able to bring in two runs. Colton Dunbar and Jose Rojas were able to bring the Eagles within seven.
Things started to slow down for the Owls in the bottom of the fifth inning. Smith was the only player to record a run in the inning, but it would push the WWU lead to 12-4.
The top of the sixth inning was huge for WBU. They were able to cut the lead in half thanks to Hayden Winberry and Dunbar who both reach home in the inning.
With a 12-6 lead, William Woods could not respond to the two runs scored for the Eagles.
Tables turned in the top of the seventh inning for Williams Baptist. They were able to bring Smith, Jacob Jumper and Winberry home and put them behind 12-9.
The Owls still could not get things going in the bottom of the seventh but kept a three-run lead.
After a strong push from Williams Baptist, they were unable to score another run. William Woods went on to win the contest 12-9 and take the series 3-0.
