LINCOLN, Ill. – The William Woods University baseball team swept Lincoln Christian College in their second-to-last road series of the season. The Owls grabbed a 10-1 win in game one and followed up with an 8-3 win in game two.
The wins bring the Owls to 14-26-1 on the season.
The Owls host Missouri Valley College for a single non-conference game on Wednesday, April 10, at 6 p.m.
Game One
Isaiah Gibbs gave the Owls an early 1-0 lead as he scored following a strikeout.
In the second,
Douglas Martin hit a two out single to shallow right field and was brought home on Gibbs' double to deep right-center field.
In the top of the third, the Owls added a third run off an error to take a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, the Owls put up four runs to go up 7-0.
Alex Wimer led off the inning with a walk and then stole second. He advanced to third on Gibbs' third hit of the day. Gibbs stole second, putting Wimer and Gibbs in scoring position for
Connor Poulson. Poulson singled to shallow right field, bringing home both Wimer and Gibbs. Poulson stole second and crossed home plate on
Marquise Doherty's double to left-center field. Doherty scored the final run of the inning on
Tyler Bracht's single to left field.
In the bottom of the fourth, LCU scored their one and only run of the game on a sacrifice fly.
In the fifth, Wimer scored on an LCU error, and Martin scored on Strilchuk's fielder's choice.
The Owls added their 10
thand final run of the game in the sixth inning with
Quincy Jones' RBI ground out to score
Brady Owen.
The Owls out-hit LCU 12-3. Gibbs went 4-for-4 from the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Z. Smith went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Poulson drove in three runs.
Parker Wilkinson (1-0) grabbed the win on the mound. He threw a one-hitter through 4.0 innings and struck out two.
Game Two
Gibbs led off game two with a single up the middle and was brought home on Poulson's double to deep left-center field to take an early 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Poulson sat at third with Doherty at first. Doherty stole second and Poulson stole home on the play.
In the bottom of the first, LCU put up a run on a single to deep right-center field.
Neither team was able to score again until the fifth inning.
In the top of the fifth, the Owls racked up five runs to take a 7-1 lead.
Brian Granton singled, advanced to second on a stolen base and scored on Wimer's single to shallow left field. Wimer and Gibbs were able to score on an LCU error, and Poulson and
Chase Gibson scored on Z. Smith's ground out.
The Owls added their eighth and final run in the top of the seventh off a Gibson single to left-center field to score Gibbs.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, LCU put two runners on with singles. On a wild throw, both runners came home to bring the game to 8-3. The Owls pulled out of the inning with no more damage done, grabbing the final out at home plate to win the game.
Gibbs went 2-for-4 from the plate with three runs scored. Poulson finished with three RBI and two runs scored.
Russell Strilchuk (1-0) was credited with the win on the mound. He pitched 2.0 innings and struck out two.
