MOBILE, Ala. – (
Tournament Page) The No. 10 William Woods University men's tennis team swept No. 24 Midland University in the first round of the NAIA National Championships on Tuesday, 8-1. The Owls have won 16 straight and will now advance to the second round on Wednesday.
The Owls will face No. 6 Keiser University at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Keiser earned a first-round bye and sits 16-6 on the season entering into the Championships.
The Owls swept doubles play to hold a 3-0 lead over Midland.
Oscar Barreiro and
Christopher Vleeming Ortiz defeated their opponent in the No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
Zach Frisbie and
Jesus Amezcua finished second with an 8-3 win. Finishing last in doubles play was
Javier Callejo and
Aaron Westerlund in the No. 1 doubles with an 8-0 shutout.
In singles play,
Patrick Shelepov finished first with a 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 4 spot.
Juan Esteban Duran grabbed the clinching point as he won in the No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-1.
Antoine Maraval won 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles, and
Sam Bird won the team's seventh point in the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-3. Westerlund won the Owls' eighth and final point of the match in the No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
