COLUMBIA, Mo. – The William Woods University softball teams continues to upset in the 2019 American Midwest Conference Tournament. The seventh-seeded Owls defeated the sixth-seeded Williams Baptist University in the second round, 1-0.
In the opening round, the Owls finished with a dominating win over the two-seeded No. 25 Central Baptist, 8-3.
The Owls will now face the winner of the Lindenwood-Belleville vs. Williams Baptist elimination game. For the full tournament bracket, click here.
Game Flow
In the top of the third, Ari Arnold hit a one-out single to right field, and a misplayed grounder by the right fielder allowed her to advance to second. Emma Walker then smashed the ball to right-center for her seventh triple of the season, bringing in Arnold for the game's one and only run.
WBU led off the bottom of the fourth with a double followed by a walk. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners to scoring position with just one out, but the Owls' defense forced two outs to get out of the inning unharmed.
In the bottom of the sixth, WBU put two more runners on in scoring position. The Owls intentionally walked a runner to load the bases with two outs, but a ground out to second ended the inning with no damage done.
The Owls were unable to get a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh, but the defense held WBU to three up, three down in the bottom of the inning to end the game with a 1-0 win.
Brittany Roady (13-7) pitched the complete game shutout win. She struck out one and allowed four hits through 28 batters faced.
Arnold went 2-for-2 from the plate with one run scored. Bri Devellano went 2-for-3, and Walker recorded the Owls' fifth hit with a RBI triple.
