FAYETTE, Mo. – The William Woods University men's soccer team held defending national champions and No. 1 Central Methodist University to just one goal in Wednesday's season opener.
The Owls and CMU went into halftime scoreless. CMU outshot the Owls 11-4 with six landing on goal.
Billy Nzojyibwami and
Luca Crivellari each put a shot on goal for the Owls.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, CMU headed in a goal from the top of the box off a corner to take a 1-0 lead.
The Owls put all three of their second half shots on goal, but were unsuccessful in getting past CMU's keeper. CMU took two more shots on goal, seven total, but the Owls defense successfully stopped them from finding the back of the net again.
Iker Gonzalez recorded nine saves in his complete game in goal.
The four shots on goal were taken by four different Owls.
The Owls continue their four-game road series on Saturday, Aug. 24, with a 3 p.m. kick-off at Graceland University (Iowa).
