WWU Volleyball Goes 1-1 in Opening Day of The Hampton Inn Volleyball Classic

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The William Woods University volleyball team went 1-1 in the opening day of The Hampton Inn Volleyball Classic. In the first game they earned their third win of the season against No.15 Master's University (Calif.) defeating the Mustangs in five sets, obtaining a 3-2 victory (25-27, 25-22, 25-27, 25-23, 15-8). In their second contest they fell to Indiana Wesleyan 3-0 (20-25, 17-25, 17-25). The Owls return will resume tournament play Saturday Aug. 31st as they face MidAmerica Nazarene at 9 a.m.

Game 1

Both teams rallied back-and-forth in the first set, allowing for a total of 15 ties throughout. Master's University achieved a 27-25 first set win.

 

In the second set, the Owls had a small lead starting off, but the Mustangs achieved their largest lead of the set, 16-9. William Woods battled back to make it, 22-22. Two eventual kills by Ally Konarzewski and a service ace from Tori Roseman gave the Owls a 25-22 second set win.

 

The Owls took an early 7-3 lead, but the Mustangs later went on a 4-0 run, leading 16-13. The Owls tied it back up at 24-24, but came up just short in the third set, 27-25.

 

Despite nine ties, William Woods led the entire fourth set. The Owls went on a 5-0 run after a kill by Remi Johnson. The Owls looked no further and captured the fourth set, 25-23.

 

The Owls went on a 7-0 run in the fifth set after a kill by Hannah Kuehl. The Owls clinched the match with a 15-8 victory, ending with another Kuehl kill.

Game 2

The Owls started with their largest lead of the set with a kill by Jaclyn Zahn, 6-2. After six ties, the Wildcats did not look back after their 16-15 lead. Indiana Wesleyan secured a 25-20 first set victory.

 

To start the second set, William Woods was in control starting with a kill by Lanie Lowry. The Owls took a two point lead after a kill by Nise Salima, 5-3. That is all the Owls had in store in the second set as the Wildcats would find their way back earning a 25-17 win.

 

The Owls went neck-and-neck with the Wildcats at the start of the third set. A kill by Faith McQueen gave William Woods their last lead of the game, 9-8. The Owls would tie two more times after that, but they couldn't quite connect. The Mustangs held on to a 25-17 victory. Indiana Wesleyan hit .292 in the match while William Woods .193.
