Owls Fall to Spartans 1-3

FULTON, Mo.  – The William Woods University volleyball team welcomed the number one ranked Missouri Baptist University Spartans to Anderson Arena for the opening night of conference play. The Owls fell to the Spartans in a 3-1 set (21-25, 25-19, 25-14, 21-25). Woods is now 8-10 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

The Owls are back in action tomorrow Sept. 18th  as they host the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets at 7 p.m.


The Owls came ready to play tonight as they were sticking right with the Spartans in set one. They found themselves tied at 7 early on. They were tied various times as the set continued. After being tied at 13, the Spartans were able to take a little space making it 17-13, but the Owls came right back cutting it to one. The Owls were not letting the Spartans slip away without a fight. Set one was tied at 20 late.
With the Owls down by one, 22-21, they took a timeout. Out of they timeout, they were unable to respond as the Spartans tallied the next four points to take set one 25-21.
Down 1-0 in the match, the Owls were looking to even things out in set two. They came out strong taking a 7-2 lead. The Spartans put a stop to the run as they closed in on the Owls 7-5. The Owls were able to keep their few point lead consistent throughout. Late in set two the Owls led 20-15. They held strong and closed out the set with a 25-19 win, evening the match 1-1.

In set three the Spartans came out with a vengeance as they quickly went up 8-1.  They kept their distance as they topped the Owls 25-14, taking the 2-1 lead.

Going into set four the Owls were not giving up. The set began much like the first with the teams neck and neck, and tied at 7 once again. The Owls went on a run taking a 12-8 lead and causing a Spartan timeout near midway through. The Spartans erased the deficit after the timeout, tying the game 13-13, now forcing a Woods timeout. The battle continued with the Owls taking a two point advantage 17-15. Neither team could pull away, tying three more times before the Owls trailed 20-19 and called another timeout. The Spartans took control down the final stretch and ended the match in four sets with a final score of 25-21.

Hannah Kuehl recorded 11 kills, while Jaclyn Zahn added eight. In addition, Kayton Coffee tallied 15 digs and Mallorie Brooks chipped in 12 of her own. Remie Johnson had 30 assists on the night.

The Owls are back in action tomorrow when they host the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets at 7 p.m.
