Kansas City, Mo. - The William Woods University women's soccer team fell 3-2 to Avila University (Mo.) in Tuesday afternoon's season-opener.

The Owls had eight unsuccessful shots on goal within the first 30 minutes of the first period.
Morgan Pettlon gave the Eagles the first goal of the game with 34:38 on the clock, 1-0.
The Owls had a chance to tie the game but Savannah Smith shot wide.
The Eagles quickly extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from Megan Nugent assisted by Cortlyn Ash with 1:45 remaining in the first half. Going into halftime, the Eagles led 2-0.
After four-straight unsuccessful shot attempts in the second half, the Owls were successful in the fifth attempt with a goal by Sydney Balducci from McKenzie Gourley's pass, 2-1, with 67 minutes on the clock.
At the 69 minute mark, Miriam Solorio found the back of the net expanding the lead to 3-1.
The Owls tried the comeback but they were only able to score one final goal in the contest with a penalty kick from Gourley, 3-2.
