Owls Conclude Season in AMC Championship Quarterfinals

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The eight-seed William Woods University women's basketball team had their 2021 season come to a close in the American Midwest Conference Championship Quarterfinal round Wednesday evening. The Owls fell to one-seeded Lyon, 58-45.
 
The Owls finish their shortened 2021 season with a 5-12 record. 
 
By The Numbers
10 – Natalie Thomas and Kiyanna Rodgers each tallied 10 points.
7 – Amaya Keeling pulled down a team-high seven rebounds with six coming from the defensive end.
5 – Amaya Keeling grabbed a floor-high five steals.
 
Game Flow
Lyon scored coming off the tip to take an early lead, but Kasey Hazell evened the score with a jumper on the next play. A three from Amaya Keeling cut the game to one with 6:08 on the clock, but Lyon pushed out a seven-point lead over the next 2 ½ minutes to hold a 12-5 lead. Two jumpers from Hazell cut the game to four, and a three from Arriyonn Phillips just before the buzzer sent the game into the second quarter with the Owls trailing by four, 16-12.
 
Natalie Thomas scored the first five points for the Owls, cutting the game to one 2 ½ minutes in, 18-17. The Owls again cut the game to one with a jumper from Phillips after Lyon scored on the other end, but Lyon then blasted an 8-0 run over a three-minute period. With 3:56 to play in the first half, Lyon led 28-19. Four points from Kiyanna Rodgers and two from Phillips pushed a 6-0 run to cut the game to three with 1:29 to play, 28-25. Lyon closed out the half with four points to send the game into halftime with the Owls trailing 32-25.
 
The Owls were held to just five points in the third quarter, sending the game into the final 10 minutes with the team trailing by 14, 44-30. Lyon scored just two points in the final five minutes of the quarter.
 
Lyon pushed out a 21-point lead after four minutes of play, 54-33. Thomas and Tori Nesslage combined for five to cut the game to 16 with 3:21 on the clock, 54-38. The Owls scored five in the final two minutes while holding Lyon scoreless, ending the game with a 13-point loss, 58-45.
