FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team split with Missouri Valley College Sunday afternoon to complete the four-game weekend series with a 3-1 record. The Owls grabbed a 13-3 game one win before losing their only game of the series in game four, 11-4.
The Owls are now 5-3 on the season.
Next up for the Owls is a four-game road series with College of the Ozarks (Mo.) on Friday, March 12, and Saturday, March 13.
Game One
MVC jumped on the board first as they took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
WWU went ahead in the bottom of the inning as they plated three runs.
Bryson Matthews hit a two RBI single with bases loaded to score
Easton Wallace and
Connor Poulson.
Alex Owens then scored on
Jack Niggemeier's sacrifice fly to left field.
The Owls added eight runs to their score in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-2 advantage. Owens hit a two RBI double to the left field fence to score
Isaiah Gibbs and Poulson and was brought home on Niggemeier's RBI single to right-center field.
Marcus Gonzalez then hit a two RBI single just over second base to score Matthews and Niggemeier. Following a stolen base, Gonzalez crossed home plate on
Chase Gibson's RBI single to bring the Owls up 9-2. Wallace then pounded a two-run homer over the center field fence to give the Owls an 11-2 lead. Following a pitching change, the Owls were served their final two outs of the inning.
MVC added a run in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly.
WWU scored two more in the bottom of the sixth to take up a 13-3 lead.
Jordan Smith scored on Wallace's ground out RBI, and Gonzalez scored on Gibbs' RBI single.
Dylan Hansen (1-1) started on the mound and pitched 5.0 innings for the win. He struck out nine while allowing just five hits and one run.
The Owls had six players with two hits each. Wallace went 2-4 from the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Gonzalez and Owens went 2-3 from the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Matthews went 2-2 with two RBI and one run scored.
Game Two
MVC again jumped on the board early as they took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with two RBI doubles and a sacrifice fly.
WWU plated one in the second inning as Matthews hit an RBI double to deep left-center field to score Owens.
MVC scored one in the third and added four more in the fourth to go up 8-1.
WWU scored three runs over the next three innings to close the gap to 8-4. In the fourth,
Kamron Morriss hit an RBI double to deep left-center field to score Gibbs. In the fifth,
Alex Wimer scored on a wild pitch, and Matthews scored on an error following his triple in the sixth inning.
MVC put three more runs up in the seventh for them to take an 11-4 lead.
Ryan Long (1-1) started on the mound and was credited with the loss. He tossed 3.1 innings and struck out seven.
Matthews went 2-3 from the plate with a run scored and one RBI. Wallace went 2-2 from the plate.
