FULTON, Mo. - The William Woods University baseball team completed a senior day sweep over Hannibal-LaGrange Saturday afternoon. With Saturday's two wins, the Owls took the series, 3-1.
The Owls won game one, 8-2, and finished the series with a 10-3 win. They move to 17-14 on the season with a 10-10 conference record.
Game One
HLG plated the first run of the game in the first on a sacrifice fly in foul territory.
WWU took over in the bottom of the inning as they plated two.
Marcus Gonzalez scored the equalizing run on a wild pitch, and
Erik Stewart scored the go-ahead run on
Easton Wallace's double to shallow left field.
Isaiah Gibbs scored on an error to give the Owls a 3-1 lead in the third.
HLG scored one in the fourth on a ground out RBI, but the Owls matched in the bottom with a Gonzalez RBI double to right-center field to score
Alex Wimer and keep a two-run lead, 4-2.
The Owls added two runs to the board in the fifth. Wallace RBI singled to shallow left-center field to score Stewart. Wallace then scored on a stolen base after
Bryson Matthews stole second and HLG threw to try to catch him stealing.
They again added two in the sixth. Gibbs scored on a passed ball, and Stewart scored the final Owls' final run on a double play to give the Owls an 8-2 lead.
Logan Bexten (3-2) pitched the complete game win. He tossed four strikeouts and allowed just five hits and no earned runs.
The Owls posted 12 hits. Gibson went 3-4 from the plate. Wallace went 2-3 with three RBI, a double and a run scored. Gonzalez and Gibbs also recorded two hits.
Game Two
The Owls took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Stewart crossed home plate on Matthews' RBI single down the left field line.
They took a 2-0 lead in the second as
Connor Poulson scored on HLG's double play.
The Owls doubled their score in the fourth inning. Poulson plated the Owls' third run on Wimer's RBI double to left field, and Gonzalez then hit in Wimer with a RBI single to left field.
HLG plated their first run on a hit by pitch in the sixth inning.
The Owls added two more in the bottom half of the inning. The Owls went back up by four on Gonzalez's RBI double to right-center field to score
Alex Owens, and Gonzalez then came home on Isaiah Gibb's RBI single to center field, giving the Owls a 6-1 lead.
The Owls put up four more runs in the eighth to extend their lead to 10-1. Gibbs hit a blazing double just above the third baseman to bring home Gonzalez. Gibbs then scored on a wild pitch to give the Owls an 8-1 lead. A Matthews RBI double to the left field fence scored Stewart, and
Jake Fleming scored on
Kamron Morriss' sacrifice fly to center.
HLG scored two as a last ditch effort in the top of the ninth on a two RBI double, cutting the game to 10-3.
Dylan Hansen (4-1) started on the mound and worked 5.0 innings for the win. He struck out five and allowed just two hits and one unearned run.
The Owls outhit HLG 14-5. The Owls had five batters with two hits each. Gonzalez, Gibbs and Matthews finished with two RBI each.
