FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University baseball team grabbed a pair of wins in their second-to-last regular season doubleheader Thursday afternoon. The Owls grabbed a 9-2 game one win and an 8-2 game two win. They improve to 20-15 on the season with a 13-11 record in the AMC.
The Owls close out the regular season on Friday, April 30, with the second doubleheader versus Williams Baptist. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
Game one
WBU scored a run with a RBI single from the second batter of the game. They went on to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third with a RBI double to right-center field.
The Owls used a hot third inning to put up six runs on five hits. Gibbs hit a RBI single to left field to score
Jack Niggemeier, and
Easton Wallace then smacked a RBI double down the right field line to drive in Gibbs for the game-tying run. A passed ball allowed
Erik Stewart to cross home plate for the go-ahead run. An error by the WBU third baseman allowed Wallace to score, and
Jake Fleming drove in Matthews and
Connor Poulson on a two RBI single to give the Owls a 6-2 lead.
Gibbs RBI doubled in the fourth to drive in Gonzalez for the Owls' seventh run.
Chase Gibson then traded bases with Gibbs, and Stewart scored on a WBU error to give the Owls a 9-2 lead.
Scoring in just the third and fourth innings, the Owls put up nine runs on nine hits.
Gonzalez went 3-4 from the plate with one run scored. Gibbs recorded two hits with two RBI and two runs scored.
Logan Bexten (4-2) pitched the complete game win. Tossing 7.0 innings, he struck out four while allowing two earned runs.
Game Two
The Owls took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a wild throw following Tyklen Salmon's bunt, allowing Gonzalez to score. Salmons then scored two batters later on Gibbs' RBI ground out.
The Owls doubled their score in the third as they plated two runs. Wallace RBI singled through the second base hole to plate Niggemeier, and Gibbs followed with a RBI single to center field to score Salmons.
They added two more runs in the fourth. Wimer scored on Niggemeier's RBI single over short stop's head, and Niggemeier came home on a wild pitch.
WBU scored their only two runs of the game in the sixth on a RBI single and a sacrifice fly to cut the game to 6-2.
In the bottom of the inning, Owens scored on Niggemeier's RBI double to right field.
Following a fielder's choice and an overthrow to first in the eighth, Owens came home for the Owls' eighth run.
Niggemeier went 2-3 from the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Gonzalez recorded two hits with a run scored.
Dylan Hansen (5-1) pitched 7.1 innings for the win. He struck out 11 while facing 30 batters and allowing two earned runs.
