Owls Come Back to Defeat CSC in Five

FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University volleyball team took an early 2-0 lead against Culver-Stockton College Tuesday evening, and after losing the third and fourth set, they dominated the fifth set to win the match 3-2. The Owls improve to 4-2 on the season.
 
The Owls won 26-24, 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 15-7.
 
This is the second win of the season over CSC. The Owls defeated CSC 3-0 just three days prior at the Hampton Inn Classic hosted by Columbia College. 
 
The Owls next play four matches at the William Penn University Tournament starting on Saturday, September 4. 
 
 
By The Numbers
54 – Tess Schannuth assisted in 54 kills.
23 – Tori Rosemann dug up 23 CSC attacks. 
18 – Hannah Kuehl led the floor with 18 kills, finishing with a .350 hitting percentage. 
17 – Riley Alton recorded 17 kills.
12 – Kassidy Phillips hit .375 on the night with 12 kills.
 
Match Highlights
Set one was a back-and-forth match with both teams battling to keep the lead. CSC took a three-point lead near the end of the set to put them just two points away from the win, forcing the Owls to call a timeout. An error gave the Owls the point, but a CSC kill put them within set point, 24-21. A kill from Hannah Kuehl jump-started a 5-0 run, and Blair Busenbark closed out the set with two aces to grab the 26-24 win.
 
The Owls jumped out to a four-point lead with a kill from Tess Schannuth in set two, 10-6. The Owls maintained the lead, but CSC cut the game to one following two WWU errors, 16-15. A kill from Kassidy Phillips and an ace from Tori Rosemann put the Owls back up by four, forcing CSC to a timeout, 20-16. The Owls then closed out the set with a 4-0 run ending with a kill from Lanie Lowry to win 25-18.
 
The Owls used a 5-0 run to take a 9-5 lead early in set three, but CSC eventually evened the score, and following a 3-0 run, they took a 17-15 lead. They added two more points before WWU called a timeout, 19-16. The Owls came out and scored the next four with three kills and an ace from Emily Greif, taking a one-point lead, 20-19.  CSC answered with a 4-0 run to bring the set to set point, 24-21, but the Owls hung on with a CSC attack error. A kill from Schannuth closed the set to one point, 24-23, but an attack error ended the set with a CSC 25-23 win.
 
The two teams went back-and-forth with the lead all throughout set four. Two kills from CSC late in the set gave them a two-point lead, and the Owls called their first timeout, 21-19. The Owls attempted to come back but CSC ended up winning 25-22, forcing the decision set.
 
The two teams traded points in the beginning of set five until the Owls struck a 3-0 run with a kill from Schannuth and two CSC errors, 8-5. After CSC scored two to bring the set within one, the Owls blasted a 7-0 run to win the set and match, 15-7.
