Owls Drop Close Game in Iowa

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The William Woods University men's basketball team lost to Clarke University by two points Wednesday evening, 72-70.

How It Happened

The Owls were never able to hold the lead in the first half. Clarke took up a six-point lead four times throughout the 20 minutes, but each time the Owls cut the game back down to a one-play deficit. 

The Owls ended the first half with a 4-0 run with jumpers from Abdulh Diaby and Fred Robinson to head into halftime trailing by two, 38-36.

Darius Yohe hit a jumper to even the score coming into the second half, and a dunk from F. Robinson gave the Owls their first lead of the game just over a minute in, 42-40.

A jumper from Nathan Schwartze put the Owls up by four, but Clarke responded with a 7-0 run in less than a minute to take a three-point lead, 49-46.

A jumper by Yoggerst, a three-point play from Jared Crutcher and a jumper from Grant Peters put the Owls back ahead with 7:31 on the clock, 60-59.

Clarke broke up the Owls run and went back ahead, but a three from Schwartze with 3:53 on the clock gasve the Owls back a one-point lead, 68-67.

The lead bounced back-and-forth thrice more, ending with Clarke going up by two with one minute remaining, 72-70. The Owls were unable to score in the remaining time, ending with a loss.
