Box Score FAYETTE, Mo. - William Woods Men's Basketball dropped to 2-2 after a tough road loss to Central Methodist University on Monday night.
CMU jumped out a 16-7 lead just five minutes into the contest before
Joey Brown IV knocked down a three to cut the deficit to six. The Eagles would lead by as many as 12 in the first half but the Owls trailed by only eight at the half 48-40.
Fueled by
Henry Shannon III the Owls were able to get off to a fast start, Shannon's bucket at the 17:58 mark cut the deficit to three at 48-45. After trailing 57-51 Woods scored six straight to tie it at 57 with 14:36 to play, capped off by another Shannon bucket.
CMU would use a mix of solid defense and timely free throw shooting to push the lead out to 75-66 with 6:39 to play. Owls pressure defense forced multiple turnovers allowing them to cut the deficit to four at 79-75 with 4:31 to go. The Eagles again would push the lead out to eight with 2:32 to play but
Jordan Ashton's team would not go away. A two-point basket from Shannon followed up with a three pointer by
Lavel Harris with 0:30 remaining had the Owls trailing 83-80. However, CMU was able to knock down their free throws and take a two-possession lead and ultimately the game with a final score of 87-81.
William Woods shot 38% from the field, 20% from behind the arc, and 56% from the free throw line.
Henry Shannon III led the team in scoring with 17 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Gacoby Jones Jr. was the only other Owl starter in double figures with 11 points and seven rebounds. Off the bench Kyle Belgrave scored 12 points and had three rebounds.
Joey Brown IV was the only other Owl player in double figures, he had 10 points.
William Woods will be back in action on Friday as they head to North Newton, Kan., for the Bethel College Classic. The Owls will take on #16 Kansas Wesleyan at 5pm followed up with Bethel College (KS) on Saturday at 5pm.
