LAS VEGAS, Nev. - In the first of back-to-back events at the USBC Tournament Bowling Plaza inside the South Point Casino and Resort, William Woods posted the second-highest individual men's score and a 14th-place individual finish on the women's leaderboard at the Glenn Carlson Las Vegas Invitational.
Jonathan Rosado finished just two pins shy of his first ever 300 game to open day two, leaving the 2-4 standing on the first ball of the tenth frame before clearing to a 278.
Hailey Triske maintained a consistent pace across nine games in two days, landing just 107 pins shy of the all-tournament team with 1,786 total pins with an average of 198.4/gm.
"I'm very happy with how both teams played in this tournament," said head coach
Bill Holbrook. "For most of our team, this environment is a brand new experience across multiple aspects - the competition venue, the tournament schedule and the travel - and both teams performed as well as I expected."
The format of the GCLVI is unique in that both days consist entirely of individual games, in contrast to individual games on day one and Baker games on day two. Rosado was one of two Owls to bowl all nine games of the event, finishing in 40th with 1,708 pins (189.8 avg.), with
Patrick Schultz also finishing in the top quarter of the 412-bowler field with his average of 183.4 (1,651 total pins) good for 59th. As a team, Woods recovered from a late slide on the first day, climbing seven spots to finish 27th in the 47-team field.
Drake Bazzy had the second-highest average for WWU, hitting a 187 mark over the final five team games.
As a team, the Owls finished 17th in a 32-team field on the women's side, climbing steadily up the leaderboard after opening the tournament in 22nd place. Triske,
Trista Rauma (50th; 1.605 pins/178.33 avg) and
Kirsten Butcher (53rd; 1,588 pins/176.44 avg) bowled all nine individual games for WWU to finish in the top quarter of the 224-bowler individual standings. After subbing into the lineup for game two, Izzy Fletcher poured on the gas on day two to finish in 64th, averaging 189.125/gm (1,513 pins) through eight games. Triske posted the highest game of the tournament for WWU, a 235 to open day two.
Both teams will also compete in the Collegiate Shootout, returning to the more traditional individual/Baker format on Wednesday, Dec. 20.
