FULTON, Mo. - Lauren Adams recorded seven service aces for William Woods, adding four kills, with
Kassidy Phillips knocking down a dozen kills as the Owls (14-5, 1-1 AMC) downed Harris-Stowe State University (6-8, 0-2 AMC) 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-15) on Wednesday night.
Woods opened a quick 3-0 lead on a pair of service aces by
Erin Treis and a block by Adams and
Kennedy Lane. Harris-Stowe managed to trim the lead briefly, but the Owls pulled away to an 11-6 lead midway through the set and held the Hornets at arm's length, eventually taking the set after forcing a ball-handling error by Nickeal Clark.
An HSSU service error to start the second set allowed William Woods to race out to a 7-1 lead and force a Hornets timeout. After the timeout, the Owls used a block Phillips and
Ella Lewis to move to 8-1, but Harris-Stowe was able to trade points back-and-forth with the Owls, eventually pulling within five points at 15-10.
After a block from Phillips and
Lorenza Lagana, Adams took to the service line and sparked a run that took WWU to a 23-10 lead. The junior racked up four aces during the run, and the Owls coasted to a 25-12 set win.
Head coach
Kandace Cook used the 2-0 lead to rotate in several players from her bench, and despite a slow start to the set, Woods settled in and pulled away for the match win.
The Owls posted a hitting percentage of .290 on the night, holding Harris-Stowe to a .063 mark. Each team saw 13 attack errors, although eight of the Hornets errors were unforced to just four for Woods.
WWU has the weekend off, but will return to AMC action on Tuesday night against Stephens College. First serve is set for 6 p.m. in Columbia.
