William Woods University (1-9, 0-5 Heart of America Athletic Conference South Division) finishes its inaugural football season in front of its home crowd, hosting No. 9 Benedictine College (8-2, 4-1) for its first-ever Senior Day at 1 p.m. Saturday at North Campus Athletic Complex.
Heading into the contest, the Owls are coming off a 35-3 defeat at Missouri Valley College last Saturday in Marshall. William Woods led 3-0 at halftime, but the Vikings outscored the Owls 35-0 in the second half to win the game 35-3. WWU finished the game with 142 yards of offense, 107 yards passing and 35 yards rushing. MVC had 404 yards of offense, 264 yards rushing and 140 yards passing.Â
William Woods' offense scores 14.3 points per game and averages 231.2 yards of offense, 203.4 yards passing and 27.8 yards rushing per game. Opponents are scoring 51.7 points per game, averaging 507.5 yards of offense, 312.8 yards rushing and 194.7 yards passing.
WWU is ranked third in the NAIA in penalty first downs (27), fifth in punts (No. - Yards) (75-2,247), seventh in kick returns (No. - Yards) (51-872) and tackles (724), 16th in interception returns (No. - Yards) (13-214), 17th in defensive interceptions (13), 22nd in fourth down percentage (56 percent), 23rd in completion-attempt-interception (169-375-14), 28th in interception return average (16.5) and 32nd in passing first downs (91).
Gabe Serri leads the Owls in passing. He is 142-for-307 for 1,703 yards and 16 touchdowns. Serri has thrown 10 interceptions and has completed 46.3 percent of his passes.
Jalen Proctor is WWU's leader in rushing. He has 47 rushes for 161 yards and one touchdown. He is averaging 16.1 yards per game and 3.4 yards per rush.
Troy Oliver leads the Owls in receptions with 69. He has 874 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Oliver is averaging 87.4 receiving yards per game.
Carter Holloway leads the team in tackles with 92 and is averaging 9.2 tackles per game. He has two interceptions, two pass breakups, one forced fumble and one sack.
Clarence Jackson is second on the team in tackles. He has 59 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and one interception.
Darrias Butler has 58 tackles on the season. He averages 5.8 tackles per game and has 5.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble.
Last Saturday at Missouri Valley, Jackson had his best game for William Woods, with a career-high 10 tackles (3.5 tackles for loss), one sack for a 2-yard loss and one interception that he returned for 25 yards.Â
Saturday is the first meeting between William Woods and Benedictine. Before the game, the Owls will honor the five seniors on their inaugural roster: defensive backs
O'Neal Cotton (Oklahoma City, Okla./University of Central Missouri),
Jaylen Wiley Scruggs (Kansas City/Northeastern State University) and
Ben Wallace (Chicago/Westminster College), wide receiver

Arin Spears (Baton Rouge, La./Trine University). This season, Cotton has 32 tackles (1.5 for loss), Scruggs has 56 tackles (two for loss) and four interceptions, Wallace has three tackles, Dennis has 11 receptions for 27 yards and one touchdown and Spears has 10 receptions for 38 yards.
Benedictine is 8-2 overall and has a 4-1 mark in the Heart South. Benedictine's only loss in division play was against then-No. 12 MidAmerica Nazarene University. The Ravens enter the game coming off a 49-10 victory over Central Methodist University last Saturday in Atchison, Kan. It was Benedictine's third straight win in Atchison.
The Ravens score 43.1 points per game and average 477.1 yards of offense. They throw for 334.3 yards per game and rush for 142.8 yards per game. Opponents score 26.9 points per game and average 388.6 yards of offense per game. They pass for 246.9 yards per game and rush for 141.7 yards per game.
Benedictine is ranked first in the NAIA in point-after-attempt percentage (100 percent), second in passing yards (3,343) and passing yards per game (334.3), fourth in sacks (34), fifth in defensive touchdowns (five), sixth in total offense (4,771), passing yards per attempt (9.9) and passing yards per completion (16), seventh in passing first downs (135) and field goals (11-13).
Jackson Dooley leads Benedictine in passing. He is 204-for-333 through the air for 3,286 yards and 30 touchdowns. Dooley has thrown eight interceptions and has completed 61.3 percent of his passes. Dalton Witherspoon is BC's leader in rushing. He has rushed 147 times for 619 yards. Witherspoon is averaging 61.9 rushing yards per game. He has scored seven touchdowns. Jacob Gathright leads the team with 44 receptions, 1,008 receiving yards and nine touchdown catches. He is averaging 4.4 receptions and 100.8 receiving yards per game. Zachary LaCombe leads the team in tackles with 53. He has four interceptions, 2.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup. Abram Phillips is second on the team in tackles with 46. He has 4.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, 1.5 sacks and one pass breakup. Blue Caplinger has 45 tackles, five pass breakups, 3.5 tackles for loss and one interception.
