COLUMBIA, Mo.- William Woods baseball (24-20-1, 11-8 AMC) lost game one to #23 Columbia College (34-12, 17-2 AMC) by a score of 15-0 on Wednesday night.
In the top of the 1
st the Owls were able to get back-to-back singles from
Jack Niggemeier and
Matt Hanson getting runners in scoring position. However consecutive strikeouts ended the Owls threat. Owls' starter
Peyton Clampitt took the hill against one of the top offenses in the nation. Clampitt would strike out the side in the first inning as the game was scoreless after one.
Woods would go down in order in the top of the 2
nd. In the bottom half the Cougars would get on the scoreboard first as they had four consecutive singles taking a 1-0 lead. A wild pinch would score another just moments later to put CC up 2-0. Clampitt was able to get a flyout and a strikeout, but the Cougars came up with some big two out hits scoring five more runs in the inning to go up 7-0 after two innings.
The Cougars would add one more in the third, four in the fourth, and three in the sixth to take the victory 15-0 in seven innings.
Against the ace of Columbia's staff, the Owls managed just five hits and left five on base as they threatened in the first, third, and fifth but were unable to get a run across the plate. Â Â
Matt Hanson went 2-3 and
Tyler Horton was 1-1 on the night.Â
After Clampitt went 2.2 Innings the Owls used
Jared Stephens,
Wyatt Fischer, and
Tyler Abney to finish out the evening on the mound.
Woods will look to bounce back against the Cougars as they play a doubleheader this afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
