COLUMBIA, Mo. - In a rematch of an 11-inning marathon from the first round of the AMC Tournament, William Woods (21-27) couldn't find its groove after weather forced a delay and a change of venue as the sixth-seeded Owls fell 7-0 to no. 3 seed Williams Baptist (36-13) on Friday. Brooklyn Spillman and
Rylee Hagens collected the only two hits for the Owls, both coming during the resumption of play at Battle High School.
Williams Baptist opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, pushing across a pair of runs on a double by Madyson Shoebottom. Shortly afterwards, storms rolled in forcing a lightning delay.
As the rain continued, the field conditions at Antimi Softball Complex deteriorated due to the lack of a tarp to cover the field. In an attempt to keep the tournament on schedule, the teams relocated to Battle High School. After waiting out the initial lightning delay, another strike was detected during the warm-up period, forcing another postponement.
Woods was able to escape the first-inning threat as play resumed on Friday morning. Hagens picked up a one-out single in the top of the second, but the Owls couldn't scratch across a run.
The Owls threatened again in the top of the fourth as Spillman singled, stole second and advanced to third on a
Brooke Lopez sac bunt. Hagens managed solid contact on a 2-2 pitch, but Megan Petty made a diving grab in center field to close out the inning.
WBU answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth.
The Owls finish their season with a record of 21-27.
