Owls Pick Up 3-1 Win Over Westminster

Box Score FULTON, Mo. - William Woods University (7-6) hosted their rival from down the street, Westminster College (1-9), in a four set contest that ended with the Owls on top. Anderson Arena was filled to the brim with fans cheering for their respective schools.

"It's always nice to have a cross town rival," said head coach Kandace Cook. "You know, we have a really good rivalry with them. It's really positive, it's really nurturing that we want to bring into our community so it's always great to battle it out."

And the first set was a battle indeed. A back and forth fight that featured kill after kill, including four from Vitoria Campos Mello. Neither team led by more than two points at any point, concluding with a set point by Meghan Nolte of the Blue Jays. Woods got hit in the jaw, but it was about to be their turn.

"They came out firing. They wanted to beat us," said Cook. We came out a little slow, a little sluggish and had to play catch up the whole time, but it was nice that we got beat a little bit. We came out strong in the second and third sets and really put our foot down and played up to the level that we are capable of. I think that's what made the difference. We play a high level of ball and we came out there and showed them what we are capable of doing."

The Owls returned to form in the second set, cruising to a 25-14 victory on the back of Campos Mello, who tallied four more kills. Westminster turned it around in the third set, staying within two points of the Woods for a majority of it. However, a kill by Pamela Durazo and some miscues by the Blue Jays gave William Woods the momentum to finish 25-17. Much of the same in the final set, as the Owls jumped to a 20-12 lead and ended the game on a loud kill by Durazo.

William Woods University has now won 13 straight matches against Westminster College. The Owls play their next match on September 13 at Haskell Indian Nations University at 3 p.m.
