ST. LOUIS, Mo. - William Woods University (1-4) opened their Heart of America South Division play against Missouri Baptist University (3-1) at Spartan Field in St. Louis. Struggles on both sides of the field for the Owls led to a 66-7 victory in favor of the Spartans.
WWU received the opening kick off, looking to put momentum in their favor early. However, the offense was held to just three plays before
Justin Sharkey was called on for the punt. MBU took no time to find the end zone, scoring on a 65 yard pass on their first play of the possession. The Spartans built an unanswered lead up to 38 points with 9:01 left in the second quarter, but the Owls showed their ability to bounce back from adversity.
Troy Oliver received the kick off and ran for 18 yards to WWU's 30 yard line. Play number one of the drive was called back due to a penalty, starting the Owls at 1st and 25 on their 15 yard line instead. A pair of rush attempts brought the Owls to 3rd and 18, when
Gabe Serri found
Chris Hunter for a 31 yard gain and the start of a big drive. Faced with another 3rd down, Serri was able to connect with
Jalen Proctor for 40 yards and the only Owls touchdown of the afternoon.
Serri finished the game completing 13 of 32 passes, tallying 141 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Jalen Becerra and
Jalen Proctor both contributed 40 receiving yards, Proctor notching a touchdown as well.
Carter Holloway and
Clarence Jackson were everywhere on the defensive end for the Owls, racking up 10 tackles each.
Jaylen Wiley Scruggs forced a fumble in the 4th quarter, the only turnover of the day for William Woods.
WWU falls to 1-4 on the season, and 0-1 in Heart of America Conference South Division play. The Owls will look to bounce back next Saturday at 1 p.m. on the home turf against MidAmerica Nazarene University.
