Martinez Labra Opens Account, (RV) WWU Wins AMC Opener at Harris-Stowe

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Playing under the lights after the game was moved back four hours, (RV) William Woods University (5-2-2, 1-0 American Midwest Conference) got the goal it needed in the second half, beating Harris-Stowe State University (2-4-4, 0-1) in its AMC opener Saturday night at Creve Couer Soccer Complex.

"Overall, thought we controlled most of the match and did a good job of limiting their attack," William Woods men's soccer coach Tommy Nienhaus said. "Our defensive effort was outstanding and earned tonight's shutout.

"Our attack was a touch off and did just enough to score. Credit to them for making it tough."

Following a scoreless first half in which the Owls outshot the Hornets 7-4, with two of their shots on goal to the Hornets' none, Woods was finally rewarded for its attacking effort in the second half.

Thirteen minutes into the second half, Nico Martinez Labra used the outside of his right foot to arc his shot into the left side of the net from just outside the middle of the penalty box, putting William Woods in front for good with a 1-0 lead.

Owls goalkeeper Matthew Dworak (3-2-1) recorded his first shutout this season, stopping all four of HSSU's shots on goal, all coming in the second half. WWU had five shots on goal, and it outshot the Hornets 12-10.

Continuing its AMC road trip in a week's time, the Owls take on Hannibal-LaGrange University (4-3-2, 0-1 AMC) at 3 p.m. next Saturday at Blackwell Field in Hannibal.
