Hughes’ Goal Decisive, as Owls Shut Out Harris-Stowe in AMC Opener

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - With the match pushed back four hours, William Woods University (5-3-3, 1-0 American Midwest Conference) got the job done nonetheless, shutting out Harris-Stowe State University (3-4-1, 0-1) 1-0 in its AMC opener Saturday evening at Creve Couer Soccer Complex.

"It was a battle in St. Louis today," William Woods women's soccer coach Lauren Robb said. "Feels good to come out and start conference with a win! Very happy Megan Hughes was able to put one away for us early in the first. We'll look to continue the momentum and focus for the next."

A known threat in the AMC after making first-team All-AMC as a freshman last season, Megan Hughes opened her account in 2024 in a huge way by netting the game-winning goal.

In the eighth minute, Zoe Lockhert played the ball to Hughes after the freshman from Camdenton was taken down on the right side of the penalty box, and the sophomore from Maryland Heights slotted her shot from the left side of the box to Hornets goalkeeper Lena-Marie Winkler's left.

Lockhert earned the assist on Hughes' goal, her second this season, tying Tess Roberts for the team lead.

Owls shot-stopper Belle Boschert (3-2-2) recorded her fourth clean sheet on the year, stopping Harris-Stowe's lone shot on goal. WWU outshot HSSU 11-5, putting five shots on goal.

Following a nine-day break from game action, the Owls get a conference preview for next season, facing Clarke University (6-1-3) of the Heart of America Athletic Conference at 4 p.m. Oct. 8 at Burrows Field in Dubuque, Iowa.
