BALLWIN CITY, Ks – The William Woods Owls (0-6, 0-2 Heart) traveled to Kansas in search of their first win of the season but were overpowered by the Baker University Wildcats (2-3, 2-0 Heart), falling 68-14 in Saturday's conference matchup.
The game began with promise for the Owls. After a solid opening drive, a Baker interception turned the momentum, setting up the Wildcats for the first touchdown of the game. William Woods responded quickly, marching 65 yards down the field over 7:08, capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gabe Serri to wide receiver Bryson Nealy. The score was tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
However, the second quarter was all Baker. The Wildcats erupted offensively while their defense clamped down on the Owls, who struggled to find answers on either side of the ball. By halftime, Baker held a commanding 51-7 lead.
Coming out of the break, Baker extended their lead with another quick touchdown. William Woods showed signs of life in the second half behind quarterback Dontae Rhodes, who connected with tight end Liam Hughes for a 30-yard touchdown. The Owls' defense also stepped up, holding Baker to just two scores after halftime.
Despite the improved second-half effort, the Owls couldn't overcome the early deficit and ultimately fell 68-14.
William Woods will enter a bye week, providing a much-needed opportunity to regroup before returning to action on October 18 when they host Missouri Valley College at 1 p.m. at NCAC.
