Karr Earns First College Win, as Owls Lose Dual at (RV) William Penn

OSKALOOSA, Iowa - Hudson Karr (149 pounds) competed for a lengthy 5:44 before earning his first college win by pinfall, and Fulton native Elijah Brocksmith (174) joined him as William Woods University's (1-9) bout winners Tuesday at Penn Activity Center. Ultimately, the Owls lost 46-10 to future conference opponent (RV) William Penn University (1-7), who have three nationally-ranked grapplers.

"Our men's team didn't have the best night," William Woods wrestling coach Jacob Lorentz said. "We lost some matches we had our opponents on their back. We need to continue to work on getting pins. We tried forcing some stuff too much tonight, and ultimately cost us in the end. We have to let the pace and matches come to us. We need to refocus and get ready for this weekend. We need to control what we can control and keep working hard."

After the Statesmen won the first three matchups to go up 18-0, Karr gave it his all and came out on top, pinning WPU's Jacob Perry in the third period with 1:16 to go in the bout. Karr's victory cut William Woods' deficit to 12 points.

William Penn furthered its advantage to 28-6 before freshman Brocksmith denied the Statesmen a third-straight win, taking a 10-2 major decision over senior Ryan Van Donselaar to narrow the Owls' deficit to 18 points.

That was The Woods' final triumph on the night, as William Penn won the three remaining official matches and the lone exhibition bout.

For its final meet before the postseason, William Woods has a day full of duals in the Grand View Duals, hosted by No. 1 Grand View University at 11 a.m. Saturday at Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
