FULTON, Mo. — Owls men's soccer (4-7-1, 2-6-1 Heart) mounted a late comeback attempt but fell 2-1 to Central Methodist (5-4-3, 3-4-2 Heart) Tuesday night at the North Campus Athletic Complex.
CMU struck first in the 25th minute when Robin Vandewalle scored off an assist from Rocco Berak to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. The Woods looked to respond before halftime, generating six shots in the final minutes, but entered the intermission trailing by one.
The Eagles doubled their lead early in the second half, converting a penalty kick in the 48th minute through Zack Lawrence to make it 2-0. The PK was earned after a hard foul in the box from the WWU keeper trying to stop the CMU advance.
Woods continued to pressure the Eagle defense, outshooting CMU 8-4 in the second half. The Owls recorded 14 shots overall, putting five on frame, while Central Methodist finished with nine shots and four on target.
With time winding down, Francesco Dibra brought the Owls within one score in the 90th minute, finishing a Charlie Williams assist at the 89:50 mark. However, Woods could not find an equalizer before the final horn.
The Owls look to rebound in their next Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup when they host the defending NAIA Men's Soccer National Champions, Grand View University on Friday night at the NCAC.
