Owls split baker

Game Recap: Baseball | | Nolan Riechers

Strong Pitching Performance Earn Owls a Split Over The Wildcats

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – William Woods (16-15, 7-7 Heart) headed to Kansas to take on the Baker Wildcats (19-13, 7-7 Heart) to start their first half of the home series against the Wildcats, where they would find themselves with a split.

Owls would find themselves in a hole as quickly as the Wildcats would put up a home run in the first inning to give them a 1-0 lead over the Owls. Evan Rainey would tie the game up in the bottom of the second with a solo home run.

With the score all even, Gavin Allen would hit cruise control, allowing that first-inning home run to be the only run he would give up. Allen would throw a complete game, striking out 5 while also working around 5 walks. Allen would only give up two hits on the day, with one run being the home run in the first.

With the offense tough to come by, Rainey would step to the plate once again and send a base hit down the right field line to score Kaden Kinsler and give the Owls another walk-off win on the season, 2-1.

Game two was more of the same from the offensive standpoint, as each offense struggled to get runs across the plate most of the day.

Baker would start it off with a run in the first to go up 1-0 early on the Owls, but the response was quick from Woods. Back-to-back doubles from Jude Gremillion and Kinsler to give the Owls the lead, 2-1.

AJ Vasquez would settle in after the first, tossing 5 innings with 6 strikeouts and only one walk, until he would run into trouble in the sixth inning.

The Baker offense would erupt for 8 runs in the top of the sixth to put the Owls in a late 9-2 hole. With not much time to respond, the Owls' offense could not muster anything and dropped the second game of the day 9-2.

The Owls will return to finish their series with Baker next Tuesday at Owls Field with a first pitch start set for 1:00 p.m.
