CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — William Woods men's soccer (2-2, 0-1) opened Heart of America Athletic Conference play Saturday evening with a 7-0 loss to Mount Mercy (2-1-1, 1-0) on the road.
Mount Mercy jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring twice within the opening six minutes. Matteo Anzallo put the Mustangs ahead in the fourth minute before Cyprien Rocard doubled the lead in the sixth minute.
The Mustangs continued to apply pressure throughout the opening half, adding goals from Jose Rodriguez in the 22nd minute and Isaak Betehe in the 37th minute to take a 4-0 advantage into halftime.
William Woods came out with increased offensive pressure in the second half, as Miles Andrews recorded three shots, including a shot that hit the crossbar in the 63rd minute. Andrews also forced two saves from the Mount Mercy keeper in the opening six minutes of the half. Britton Purewal added a shot on goal in the 64th minute, but Mount Mercy keeper Zach Biggs turned it away.
Mount Mercy added three more goals in the second half, including a penalty kick from Anzallo in the 49th minute. Tomas Parra Reyna scored in the 77th minute before Reuben Brown capped the scoring with a goal in the 86th minute.
The Owls finished the contest with six shots, placing three on goal, while Mount Mercy recorded 16 shots with nine on frame. Andrews led Woods with three shots, including two on goal. Purewal and Eski Equisabel each added a shot on goal.
Woods returns to the pitch on Tuesday evening as they host Culver-Stockton College at the NCAC.
