Owls Fall in Close Matchup at MMU

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — William Woods women's soccer (2-2, 0-1 Heart) fell just short against Mount Mercy University (2-1, 1-0 Heart) in a thrilling matchup with the Mustangs. Woods tallied a goal early in the game but were unable to capitalize on later advances, conceding two goals in the second half.

After taking a weeklong hiatus, the Owls offense picked up right where they left off. Sophomore striker Laura de Vries notched her second goal of the season after a beautiful pass from senior Tess Roberts. The Netherlands native delivered a strike that barreled over the keeper for the first point of the contest.

Despite advances and shots on goal from both sides, neither team was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of the first half.

Coming out of the intermission, Mount Mercy's Orla Humphrey found her first goal of the night. The Mustang forward leveled a shot off a cross from Hazel Koenighain to level the match at one goal apiece.

In the closing minutes, Koenighain again set up Humphrey, allowing the forward to earn her second goal in the 85th minute and give Mount Mercy the lead.

Owls freshman keeper Bella Dehner reeled in six saves in the contest.

The Owls return to the pitch on Tuesday night when they host Culver-Stockton.
