FULTON, Mo.— William Woods men's soccer (3-4-1, 1-3-1 Heart) battled back and forth with (RV) Graceland University (5-2-1, 2-1-1 Heart) in a thrilling 2-2 deadlock at the North Campus Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon to close out Homecoming weekend.
Woods struck first after applying early offensive pressure. The Owls launched attempt after attempt at the Graceland back line, but the Yellowjackets' defense held strong. At the 11-minute mark, an aggressive defensive play in the box by Graceland gave William Woods its best opportunity to score. Charlie Williams stepped up for the penalty kick, but his initial attempt was saved by the keeper. Williams collected the rebound and fired another shot that struck the crossbar before falling to Miles Andrews, whose attempt was blocked by a defender.
Graceland escaped the penalty kick unscathed thanks to a spectacular team defensive effort.
At the 22-minute mark, Woods found the opening goal of the contest. The Owls launched a counterattack, playing the ball out of their back line and into the middle of the field. Williams collected the ball and threaded a pass between two defenders to Andrews. The speedy forward took advantage of the opportunity, slotting a shot between the near post and the outstretched arms of the Graceland keeper to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
Neither team was able to capitalize on its chances late in the first half, setting the stage for an eventful final 45 minutes of play.
Graceland leveled the match just two minutes after the intermission. Jeremias Acosta led the Yellowjackets' attack, with his initial attempt stopped by the William Woods keeper. However, the ensuing collision left the net open, allowing Acosta to bury the rebound and even the score at 1-1.
Just 10 minutes later, the Yellowjackets found the go-ahead goal. Kaden Edwards unleashed a shot toward the Woods net, but the Owls replacement keeper made the initial save. Edwards collected the rebound and placed his second attempt inside the far post and out of reach of the keeper to give Graceland its first lead of the match.
Trailing for the first time, the Owls looked to turn the tide. Woods ramped up its offensive attack, recording five shots, with two forcing saves from the Graceland keeper.
The Owls finally broke through in the closing minutes as Francesco Dibra headed home his fourth goal of the season. Freshman winger Salvador Grandinetti delivered an immaculate pass into the box, where Dibra finished to bring the match level at two goals.
Both teams continued to push for a game-winner in the final minute, but neither could break the deadlock.
The Owls return to the pitch Wednesday night when they host Baker at the North Campus Athletic Complex.
