AMC Tournament Win for Owls

Sanders Scores in Owls Win
(FULTON, Mo., Nov. 5)--The William Woods University women's soccer team defeated visiting Hannibal-LaGrange University 2-0 Friday night at Firley Field. The #4 seed Owls defeated the #5 seed Trojans to advance to the semifinals of the American Midwest Conference Postseason Tournament.

Junior Kelsey Sanders (Jefferson City, Mo.) scored in the 22nd minute to give the Owls the only score they would need. She scored off an assist from junior Anne Weaver (St. Charles, Mo.) and junior Jamie Bond (Springfield, Mo.). The scoring run began from the right wing at the midfield line. Weaver sent a crossing pass to Bond on the left wing. The pass caught Bond in stride. Bond found Sanders on the right wing at the top of the box. Sanders worked past one defender and fired a shot past the H-LG goalie.
Weaver added a penalty kick in the 36th minute to push the lead to 2-0 in the opening half. She was taken down by a H-LG defender in the box on a scoring opportunity. Weaver's penalty kick was executed to perfection to give the Owls a two goal cushion.

Neither team would find the back of the net in the second half. The WWU defense turned back the Trojan offense on multiple occasions as they tried to push numbers forward.

Sophomore Anna Hatfield (Desoto, Ill.) had four saves for WWU in the shutout victory. William Woods outshot the Trojans 11-7. Each team had four shots on goal.

H-LG finishes the season 7-7-3. WWU improves to 8-8-2. They will return to action on November 8. The Owls will play top seed McKendree University at 6 pm in Lebanon, Ill.
